Just prior to his relatively big budget period with the likes of BEAUTY, HOT DREAMS and HEAVEN'S TOUCH, Shaun Costello (a/k/a "Warren Evans") helmed this spectacularly underrated gem of a movie. With a clever, bittersweet script and a superstar cast, AFTERNOON DELIGHTS offers as much food for thought as for your libido.
A patently awful if ludicrously catchy title tune gets the credits out of the way. Five divorced men (all but one, the ever dependable Eric Edwards, middle-aged) gather for their weekly poker game. Only this time Edwards, who gained industry immortality by playing the "Harry Crocker" character in Ron Sullivan's SEXCAPADES and its follow-up GREAT SEXPECTATIONS, has a few surprises in store, the first being the presence of a fully-kitted French maid (bug-eyed beauty Christie Ford from Cecil Howard's PLATINUM PARADISE). The other surprise is his plan to forfeit their weekly game for a round of soul searching that will have every one of them anonymously committing their former wives' sexual transgressions to paper to have them read out loud by one of the other participants.

When is a porn film not a porn film ? In this case when it's directed by late "real world" celebrity John Derek, a man better known for his marriages to some of the world's most glamorous women (Ursula Andress, Linda Evans and Bo Derek) than for his efforts both in front (ADVENTURES OF HAJJI BABA) and behind (BOLERO) the cameras. LOVE YOU is one of those rare films that straddles the no man's land between pornography and traditional cinema and considerably more erotic than other attempts to do so like Curt McDowell's strangely perverse or should that be the other way round ? THUNDERCRACK! or Candida Royalle's downbeat science fiction sex saga REVELATIONS.
Of course, not everyone agrees on this assessment. Many a porn critic, including the late and usually great Jim Holliday, has taken the movie to task for lacking the type of sex scenes they assume genre fans want. As my adult film viewing habit nears the quarter century mark, I for one can assure them they're wrong.
One of the reasons I've always enjoyed porno, and I'm sure quite a few others do as well, is the chance of witnessing a moment of truth, when a performer's professional detachment crumbles and the audience is allowed a brief glimpse at the real person underneath.

Charlie (Annette Haven) is a beautiful, but reserved young woman. When her husband Steve (Wade Nichols) arranges for them another couple to spend a romantic weekend together on a secluded section of California beach, it becomes clear to Charlie that in order for her to enjoy true pleasure, she will have to break free of her reserved shell.
Profound porno that maintains a captivating tone throughout (the score was my favorite aspect of the production) with all the things that most great "regular" films have too, like convincing acting, character development, a coherent plot that builds towards something and a lot of emotion. Lust, doubt, fear, love, jealousy and maybe most importantly hope to escape the known and to transcend into a spiritual world beyond society's moral boundaries.
Unfortunately the film just sort of fizzles out in the end inside a sexual fantasy which is akin to a cinematic coitus interruptus but I guess I'll just have to assume that the main character reached her moment of nirvana when the movie suddenly ends. But that's only a small minus for what comes across as a very honest and idiosyncratic film that is neither your average porno nor your average art-house flick but in many ways a combination of the best of both worlds. Certainly what makes 'Love You' immediately stick out are the gobsmacking visuals which just happen to depict blowjobs and penetration on a beach but it might as well show a knight playing chess with Death on a beach.
In Britain, the film was re-edited down to 80 minutes, and had all of the hardcore footage removed.

Reluctant to revisit their explicit exploits to this day, team in life as well as labor of Edwin and Summer Brown crafted several of the more successful attempts at the so-called "couples film", that mythical beast born to break down barriers between the sexes. The reality of most of these well-intentioned attempts was that, rather than satisfy male and female viewers alike, their frequently clueless approach ended up pleasing no one. Part of the demographic themselves, the Browns were an exception, producing a batch of increasingly impressive technical merit over the ten year period between 1975's CHINA GIRL and their 1986 DREAMGIRLS with a few early '90s efforts tagged on as a coda. Serving as a testimony to the genre's good health circa 1982, their adult adaptation from some of the lesser known tales from the compendium of folk tales from the Middle East commonly referred to as The Arabian Nights proves the most lavish of their sexual spectacles. Unfortunately, the sluggish pace - inspired, perhaps, by ill-advised reverence to its lofty literary source - also makes it their most stilted.

A group of high school friends are reunited and head out to a mysterious island. Once on the island a mysterious voice is heard and warns them that something bad is going to happen.
This porno is a spoof on the Ten Little Indians theme but it does very, very little with it. I mean, this film clocks in at just 68-minutes and the majority of that delivers on the sex. If you're expecting any sort of story then you're going to be disappointed. There is a brief "mystery" happening but if you can't spot the killer as soon as he/she is on the screen then you should never be allowed to watch a movie again.
The cast is decent for this type of film and fans of Vanessa del Rio will be happy to see her here. This here was released by Vinegar Syndrome as a double feature with SHERLICK HOLMES and there's no question that the Harry Reems film is the winner of the two.

French adult movie (original title ONDEES BRULANTES) has a couple going into a cutting room where they're going to watch some rushes from a porn movie but soon they find each other more interesting than the movie.
I'm not an expert on this type of film but if you read around it appears that the French are considered masters at this type of adult movie. I'm not going to argue that but this one here is about as cheap as one can get. We pretty much get a film within a film as our four people (including Brigitte Lahaie) simply watch what looks to be very rough outtakes from something really cheap. After a while they all go at it in the room. That's pretty much all there is storywise but I'm guessing most people will be attracted to this film for the appearance of Lahaie. Fans of her certainly won't be disappointed as she pretty much does everything possible to both men and the woman on board. The film (with the four in the room) is fairly well made with some nice shots and a rather good music score but the outtakes are all rather poorly done.

The late Paul G. Vatelli (who died of an AIDS-related illness somewhere in the mid-'80s) may not have been an overly talented filmmaker in the adult field but he had at least one enviable gift that set him apart from much of the competition. He could really create a sensuous mood through a combination of lighting and cinematography (he started out a DoP and fulfilled that function on his own directorial efforts), editing and music, giving birth to some of the more successful "couples films" of the period. He always made female performers look their best by putting them in frilly Frederick's of Hollywood type lingerie with tastefully subtle hair and make up to match. Along with BODIES IN HEAT and STIFF COMPETITION, I LIKE TO WATCH makes for a triumvirate of his very best work.

Ron Sullivan directed this excellent feature in the vein of Redford's classic "The Candidate" a decade before, and it plays like a real film. This couldn't be made today, since instead of 40-minute unedited humping, it manages to integrate 10 concise, sometimes even fleeting, sex scenes and tons of story into a neat 81-minute package.
Paul Thomas is perfectly cast as the candidate, a liberal Democrat running for the U.S. Senate from New York; he's already a sitting congressman. Gimmick is that he's a complete phony, as corrupt as they come, and his comeuppance is telegraphed early on as his campaign manager Joey Silvera, driving the van/bus Thomas uses out on the trail, is in charge of its loudspeaker, hint, hint.
A well-crafted script credited to Sullivan (in his nom de porn Henri Pachard) and Joyce Snyder (a handsome lady who appears later in a non-sex role) has some decent subplots, mainly concerning Thomas's philandering ways.

Katharina, die Nackte Zarin, as it was originally titled, has been a personal obsession of mine since I happened to see a trailer for the film and fell in love with the pouting Uschi Karnat (aka Sandra Nova) who plays Catherine the Great (Katharina) in this film.
First, this is an "adult" film. This fact needs to be established at the beginning because part of my interest in the film is how it differs in some ways from other films in this highly formulaic genre. Next, I have seen two versions of this film, a feature running 107 minutes by my DVD player, which focuses more on the story, and a two part film which stresses more the sex at the expense of the story. Which of these versions one would prefer to see might depend on what the viewer is primarily interested in watching the film for. I like both versions!
The 107 minute version (the version I saw in French) is the story of Basil, a member of the Queen's army. A Cossack group has started a rebellion and its leader has set himself up as the new Czar. The Cossacks attack Basil's village, killing many of the peasants. Basil seeks help from the Queen, but finds that she is more interested in personal pleasure than matters of state.

If for some reason this title stands out in the pornographic panorama of the 80s, it is basically because of the stellar appearance of the great and ill-fated Shauna Grant who, although here she does not act as the protagonist as such, when she appears on the scene she completely devours everything around her. Your surroundings.
A summer camp for wealthy girls with lax morals is the common thread for a fairly conventional story shot effectively and written with verisimilitude in the pornographic context. The sense of humor around a simple and effective script is evident with the recurring gag of Paul Thomas continually fearing that he will be fired for interacting with the boarding school sluts, who keep harassing him to sleep with him. Very funny.

This is a great example of how a hackneyed hardcore situation - partially suggested by the unimaginative title - can yield pure erotic gold in hands of the right director, in this case the late great Claude Mulot who drowned in the surf at St. Tropez in 1986 and was arguably the finest French fornication filmmaker of the '70s. Borrowing his porn pseudonym of "Frédéric Lansac" from the main character in his initially unsuccessful 1970 horror effort THE BLOOD ROSE, which has since gone on to garner a cult following Post Mortem, he was clearly on a roll during the first few years of legalized Continental core cinema, cracking out one carnal classic after the other (PUSSY TALK, BLUE ECSTASY, SHOCKING!) until a change in government notoriously cracked down on the budding industry's already modest profit margins by charging its entrepreneurs with unreasonably high taxes. Unlike his carnal com-padres, even those slaving away from their relatively cushy position of steady purveyors to production and distribution giant Alpha France, Mulot always tried to preserve at least a modicum of ambition as budgets dwindled.
