The air of sadness and seclusion that permeates A COMING OF ANGELS is furthered by shooting much of the film's footage in the desolate wintry landscapes of upstate New York and the presence of a comparatively compact eight person cast, each of them a bona fide legend or cult favorite which lead to late great porn historian Jim Holliday dubbing the movie "Superstar City" in his seminal 1986 tome Only the Best. This was an apparently one time only directorial outing for Joel Scott, whose single other (verifiable) credit was as producer of the also not quite mainstream SOMETIME SWEET SUSAN. Taken together, both films show a willingness to break away from fornication film formula in both form and content.

If the credits are to be believed, "Prisoner of Paradise" it was co-directed by former Playboy Playmate Gail Palmer and the ever-reliable Bob Chinn, godfather of the long-running Johnny Wadd series. In truth, Palmer's centerfold notoriety was rarely more than a marketing gimmick; his "creative input" was largely, as one Hustler critic admitted several years ago, limited to trading physical favors for good reviews.
In a bizarre prequel of sorts to his already established incarnation as super-sleuth Johnny Wadd, the late John Holmes plays U.S. Marine Joe Murray, stranded on a seemingly deserted island—actually, Hawaii—following an aerial bombing raid (footage taken from "Tora! Tora! Tora!", 1970) with only the memory of his lost love, the prostitute Mai Lin, for company. Unbeknownst to them, deranged Nazi Colonel Hans Von Schlemel (Elmer Fox, known as "Hans Mueller") has set up camp with two tough companions, Ilsa (superstar Seka) and Greta (Sue Carol), for the sole purpose of extracting strategic information.

Producer Harold Lime (THE ECSTASY GIRLS) and director "Ramsey Karson" a/k/a Richard Kanter (who made the sexploitation favorite THE RIBALD TALES OF ROBIN HOOD) followed up their brilliant DESIRES WITHIN YOUNG GIRLS with this disappointingly ordinary offering that'll be of interest mainly to longtime genre fans because of its Golden Age superstar cast.
The premise is that old adult movie stand-by : the object that awakens its owner's dormant sex drive, in this case a gold pendant crafted by pagan druids ! Following a brief solo stint by then current Penthouse Pet of the Month Mariwen Roberts, the trinket's first owner is spoiled party girl Dee Dee (the vastly underrated Lesllie Bovee who would partner as well as match huge John Holmes in that same year's ERUPTION) who doesn't quite remember how the jewel came into her possession except that it somehow wound up in her purse after a booze-soaked night on the town.
