Reading the local (Belgian) reviews for this movie, you'd seriously think we're moving back in time. Critics seem to be bending over backwards in their defense of sexually explicit imagery (okay, there's a little bit of what could be considered hardcore footage here, but nothing on the level of, say, BAISE-MOI for instance), once again trying to establish the thin line between art and pornography, forgetting (conveniently, perhaps ?) to really focus on the film instead. Could it be that Harmony Korine's razor sharp screenplay, largely based on the personal experiences of some of director Larry Clark's friends and models, actually hit too close to home for a lot of people to admit ?
Though the sleepy suburb in this movie might qualify as quintessential Americana by definition of many, I can assure you that the stuff that happens over there takes place all over the world. A lot of things both the adolescents and their parents go through were instantly recognizable to me personally, and I'm a 35 (going on 36) year old employee from that minuscule ant heap of a country called Belgium. How's that for universal appeal?
Too many adult viewers would still seem to prefer to deny the very possibility that their teen-aged children harbor strong sexual desires, let alone the likely consequence that they've already acted upon them ! It may strike some as slightly unsavory that now 59 year old Larry Clark addresses such issues (especially given the level of unflinching honesty and carnal frankness demonstrated here), as he did in both KIDS and BULLY previously, but nearly no one else apparently dares to come anywhere near this topic as of yet. Much more than simply courting controversy, Clark (and co-helmer Lachman) have crafted a beautiful, funny, touching, heartbreaking and absolutely haunting (those final frames with the titular Ken Park will be etched in my mind for life) work of, yes, art.

Italians often say the greatest Gialli (excessively violent Italian murder mysteries) were only produced during the early 70s. Well, they are probably right. You can hardly refer to the late-80s "Arabella the Black Angel" as a good giallo, but boy is it ever entertaining!!! In fact, the whole giallo sub-plot is nothing but a mere footnote, since the film is primarily a semi-pornographic thriller full of demented characters with perverted fetishes and kinky after-dark habits. Beautiful and voluptuous nymph Arabella, or Deborah, roams the streets at night and visits secluded bondage/orgy clubs because her beloved husband Francesco is paralyzed and can't physically please her. The reason why he's in a wheelchair is actually quite hilarious and, moreover, Arabella's own stupid fault! During a raid at the orgy club, she's raped by a filthy copper who subsequently lets her go, but only to show up at her front gate the next day for a second portion of joyful sex…

The movie almost gets approached like a 'normal' and more serious movie, meaning that it has some good camera-work and some great settings and costumes. It's an erotic take on the Dracula story, that's definitely not original or anything groundbreaking within its genre but the film-makers still did a good job at making it a quality production, with lots of time and effort put into it, which eventually all pays off for the movie in the end. A great touch as well was the addition of some comedy. Lets face it, the movie porn industry often takes itself far too serious, while this movie seems to realize all too well that what they are doing is quite ridicules and nothing that would win them any awards, so they decided simply to have some fun with it. It really makes this movie quite an entertaining one.

Made to cash in on the notoriety of Tinto Brass's 1979 movie 'Caligula', Italian trashmeister Bruno Mattei's 'Caligula and Messalina' is packed to the gills with depravity. Despite lacking the hardcore action and graphic gore to be found in Brass's movie, Mattei's production (english dubbed available on in an Extended X-rated cut 101 minute version) is still fairly entertaining stuff. John Turner stars as nutty Roman Emperor Caligula, who commits incest with his sisters, makes his horse a member of the Senate, and executes the innocent on a whim. Messalina (played by gorgeous Betty Roland) is a power-hungry nymphomaniac who will stop at nothing to become Empress of Rome. She brings herself to the attention of Caligula by battling in the gladiator arena and it is not long before she achieves her goal, upsetting the Emperor's youngest sister Agrippina, who hopes that her son Nero will eventually become ruler of Rome.

In this quasi-art-film that plays like a voyeuristic soft-porn is a story about a sex addicted man called, Richard O, played brilliantly by the great and versatile French actor, Mathieu Amalric. The sex scenes are pretty hardcore, some erotic, some confronting, and some just plain weird, but fascinating to watch! These confronting scenes didn't seem to scare Mathieu Amalric, who was so convincing as the tortured slave to sex. In this day and age, sex can be found almost anywhere, most notable on the internet, and it was something that this film did not look into. Maybe the director didn't want to go down that path which would open up another can of worms. Instead it looked into how a lost, wandering soul, can find solace in the pleasures of sex. How the act of sexual fantasies can be a perfect distraction from the harsh realities of life. Not recommended for the weak hearted, or the narrow-minded. But worth for the performance of Mathieu Amalric.

The second Bangkok movie by Dietrich is far less memorable than Heisser Sex in Bangkok. It doesn't have the entertaining dubbing and story of the first film. Instead, we get a typical sex film that has nothing to offer besides the usual stuff. The movie is about a group of male tourists and their female guide that visit Bangkok. Parts of the film take place inside an airplane. I expect to see that airplane-interior again because I have Dietrich's Stewardesses on my watch-pile. Most of the sex-scenes are dreams of the characters and are presented in a surreal way (slow-motion + psychedelic music). Speaking of music, the music in this is probably the best part of the film. It gets pretty trippy at times. So if you like psychedelic music from the 60s and 70s you might enjoy at least that. There's also a nightclub scene that is quite well done. Eric Falk is also in the film. He's always a presence.
