J.B.1 fits squarely into the genre cinema that characterized much of Bénazéraf's filmography, which explored sexuality and transgression from an explicit perspective. The lack of stylistic innovation in J.B.1 is no coincidence, as the attempt to present a kind of documentary about the actions of his work seems to fulfill that purpose, avoiding any artistic embellishment. The performances meet the demands of a script that prioritizes physical interaction and bodily expression over psychological insight.
Overall, J.B.1 is a strange film that remains faithful to its creator's aesthetic and thematic interests. It does not pretend to be a work of conventional narrative or a character study, but rather a loose, historical representation of its time.

This forgotten explicit film demonstrates clearly the dichotomy between competent photography and any semblance of filmmaking ability. It's not a movie at all, but over an hour of Silent Era travelogue plus explicit sex (without cumshots). The concept was to showcase in XXX mode the charms of Mariwin Roberts, who looks more like a Miss USA beauty contest winner than one of Bob Guccione's stable of models. Seeing her hump lame-o Gerry Roberts (presumably her husband) over and over is what you get, extremely boring after a while.
The opening credits advertise two other actresses, but they have fleeting non-sex bit parts as secretaries working with our heroine. Film is lamely framed as "what I did on my summer vacation" as Roberts tells them of her romance in Hawaii. The video box is even more misleading, listing several fictitious names of actresses plus "and more" when in fact this is as close to the two-hander cast format of SLEUTH as you can get. Perhaps the most relevant aspect of the film is that we will be able to enjoy the beautiful protagonist Mariwin Roberts in a sexually explicit role never before seen, a far cry from her more comfortable roles in B-movies and R-rated or softcore projects.

Producer/Director Nick Phillips (in this case, crediting himself as Nick Millard) made a number of "fetish" erotic films from the mid 1960s until the mid 70s, each one getting a little "harder" as the years went by. His films were also typically shot without live sound, so the audio track is voice-over with a jazzy sax music accompaniment. "Pleaures of a Woman" is a series of erotic encounters between a young woman and her recently-widowed aunt, played by the Queen of 70s Erotica (at least in my books!) Uschi Digart. The love scenes are lengthy and fairly risqué for the time, with plenty of full nudity - Phillips takes full advantage of Uschi's buxom talents, and she doesn't disappoint! I have this movie on DVD from Alternative Cinema, which also contains a modern-day remake starring Misty Mundae. Personally, I like the 1972 version better - but I'm a huge fan of Uschi Digart. Image quality is great, as it is on the other Nick Phillips films that I have on DVD.

Just once again explored some more of the Japan erotic cinema and I must say that the Asian people once again don't disappoint when it comes to a skin flick. This title "Zoom Up: The Beaver Book Girl" is once again a Japan erotic masterpiece from the Nikkatsu collection. The tale involves a sexual mystery set in the world of the pages of adult magazines. Starting many years ago with a Japanese woman who was brutally attacked in an old factory, with her attacker escaping leaving behind a trail of money. Connecting up with the present many years later an adult photographer who's snapshots of underwear pictures meets a mystery female who's a model in disguise. This encounter will reveal a hidden mystery. Overall good Japanese erotic film that pushes the limits showing the violent and mind numbing side of sex this is one film you will remember.

Following a number of disappointments viewing some highly-regarded Jess Franco movies, I warily approached this Erwin C. Dietrich production - which came none too soon, considering that I'd had the VHS of SEXY SISTERS for six days before I could summon enough courage to try it! It's similar to SINFONIA EROTICA (1979) in that its characters are motivated either by greed or sexual frustration, and in its general depravity. Like SINNER (1972), then, while the film purports to be the character study of a single nymphomaniac, sex is virtually the only thing all the characters - and, by extension, the director himself - think about!; having four women in the brew, for instance, was a bit much, though the nurse's character (torn between her 'boss', Jack Taylor, and her genuine feeling for Karine Gambier) is quite interesting.
The formal look of the film (especially interesting is the interior design of the sisters' mansion with its proliferation of feline imagery) extends itself to the trim plot line, the effective but unobtrusive score and the generally balanced performances (though it must be said that no member of the cast is particularly taxed by the level of acting necessitated by the film).

Jess Franco's erotic twist on the vampire legend has Lina Romay playing Countess Irina, the last member of a vampire family who plans on ending the legacy. A troubled journalist (Anna Watican) shows up to interview Irina and soon the vampire is putting a spell on her. This film is available in three different versions. A hardcore one, which I've watched before, a horror version and a softcore version, which is being reviewed here. The difference in this take on the vampire legend is that Romay doesn't suck the blood out of the neck but instead sucks the semen out of you know where. When you talk to Franco fans about this film you'll usually start a heated debate but to me this is one of the directors best films. The opening, with Romay, naked of course, walking through a fog filled forest, really sets the tone for the film, which also includes a terrific and haunting score by Daniel White. Romay plays a mute in the film and I think this is one of her best performances because she's able to display a sadness that really works for the film. It doesn't hurt matters that she walks around completely naked throughout the movie and this beauty is certainly her in prime shape. This softcore version is certainly more erotic than horror but this is just fine as I find the movie to be incredibly sexy. There's a nearly ten minute lesbian scene between Romay and the reporter, which is extremely hot. Franco himself as well as Jack Taylor, Alice Arno and Monica Swinn has supporting roles and all add fine work (although it's hard to tell with some of the English dubbing). This version runs a tad bit too long at 101-minutes but if you get caught up in the dream like nature of the film then you really are seeing one of the more unique sexploitation films out there. I've seen the XXX version, which is just downright ugly and kills the beauty of the original film but I'm still trying to seek out the horror version and will hopefully come upon it sometime soon.

It happens with the obvious disconnect between the actors and their respective characters. It feels like a long-running gag without the need for punchlines or whatnot. But I do get the film's experimentation. The need to find flexible actors in every VMX genre possible. An investment in training and giving experience to talents. I guess it's their version of My Fair Lady-ing it - but make it softporn. And about the film? Well, the title's lack of imagination encompasses the entirety of the medium.

Box Tinto Brass” is pleasant to look at, horny, titillating, cheeky, and occasionally funny and that´s all I want from a Tinto Brass film. Why would I give a movie a bad rating, if it does exactly what it sets out to do, even if it´s just soft porn?

What supposedly goes on 'behind convent walls' is the subject matter of pretty much every nunsploitation film ever made, and this film is director Walerian Borowczyk's take on the theme. Given that he previously directed LA BÊTE (1975); I have to say that I was expecting something a little stranger from the director, and while the film does have some quirks not seen in other nunsploitation efforts; it has to be said that it's pretty much a textbook entry and that is really the most disappointing thing about it. As ever, its sex, Satanism and general sinning that is the order of the day; although the film does not really follow a set narrative. The film is apparently based on a novel by someone called 'Stendhal' and focuses on a convent, where most of the nuns are beautiful and like to do everything except what nuns are supposed to do (despite having seen so many films about nuns, I actually don't know what that is!). Basically, what we get is the leaders of the convent trying to instill proper values in the nuns, while the nuns ignore them.
