Roberta Findlay's anything goes (including the kitchen sink) approach to comedy works best within the sort of free form narrative she employed on fornication farces like SLIP UP or SWEET, SWEET FREEDOM a/k/a HOT NURSES. On such occasions she achieves an almost anarchist brand of movie-making madness where pretty much anything can occur at any given moment as long as it gets a laugh, even if it is one of disbelief. H.C. Potter's comparatively sane film version of Nat Perrin's famously lunatic stage play HELLZAPOPPIN' seems to have been of great influence on her style. Tied down by the demands of spoofing an already existing popular source, in this case Mel Brooks' magnificent 1968 comedy classic THE PRODUCERS, Findlay's clearly out of her league however. Though departing from a solid screenplay she co-authored with R. Allen Leider (who would subsequently pen GLITTER and the straight horror offering THE ORACLE for her), the movie wavers wildly between effective and embarrassing, directed so broadly as to have scene punchlines virtually disappear amid the loud kvetching of a cast largely left to its own devices. Fortunately, several of these performers (Bobby Astyr, Robert Kerman, Ron Jeremy, Veronica Hart & Samantha Fox) have a theater background they can fall back on, rendering their shtick more palatable than that of their noticeably floundering colleagues.

When all is said and done, and though he was responsible for few of their masterpieces (excluding LES BAS DE SOIE NOIRE and L'INITIATION D'UNE FEMME MARIEE), the frothy fornication farces of Claude Bernard-Aubert a/k/a "Burd Tranbaree" will probably go down as being most representative of production and distribution company Alpha France's house style that dominated Parisian porno palaces throughout the Seventies, breathing its last (theatrical) gasp at the dawn of the next decade. Invariably set in the country's capital, among the comfortably well-off, they were good-natured yarns of married couples who had come to take each other for granted until they discovered that a little fooling around could spice up their stale relationship no end. Already approaching middle age by the time he made his dirty movie debut (1976's LA FESSEE at 46), Bernard-Aubert clearly clung to his bourgeois values. So while all kinds of transgressions might be committed wholeheartedly over the course of the movie, the status quo had to be somewhat restored in the third act.

Ah, the so-called "Couples Film" ! In the early '80s, the adult industry desperately tried to appeal to female viewers by supplying "thoughtful" story lines and "realistic" sex, or so the pr machines were working hard to make us believe. More to the point, it proved a stillborn, mythical creature that was to have been all the rage - as it should have augmented box office takes by dragging in the punters' better halves - but somehow wasn't. The how and why are open to discussion. As far as I'm concerned, neither male nor female porn enthusiasts were holding their breath for soap opera plots dealing with unhappy relationships with lifeless, lovey dovey groping to match. Various genre critics have pointed out over the years that the best adult films have universal appeal and that the frequently misunderstood female viewer can appreciate a hot f*** as much as the average guy does.
One aspect of adult-oriented fare that really did benefit from a more sensitive approach though was the creation through writing and acting of believable female characters who were sexually both confident and independent rather than at the mercy of some "male chauvinist pig". Husband and wife team "Edwin and Summer Brown" a/k/a director Edwin Durell and producer Sandra Winters pretty much made it their lifelong quest to fill this gap with a long list of adult features including FOR THE LOVE OF PLEASURE, IRRESISTIBLE and A THOUSAND AND ONE EROTIC NIGHTS catering to the tastes of more sophisticated adults willing to view women as far more than mere carnal playthings while still retaining all the heat that great adult entertainment should offer.

Well-off housewife Tiffany (popular French actress Dominique Saint Claire) breaks away from her boring daily routine by arranging a date with prostitute Betty (the incomparable Veronica Hart), who attempts to teach her the ropes of lesbian sex before sending her on a day trip of sexual self-discovery. The starting point is the racy radio show hosted by Florence Nightingale (a hilarious performance by the legendary Vanessa Del Rio), who offers explicit advice (not to mention physical demonstrations) to her aroused studio audience. Imagining herself in a passionate embrace with the sex therapist, Tiffany loses her composure when it's her turn to be interviewed and leaves the studio embarrassed.
This "minor" classic from the Golden Age of adult cinema should have been re-evaluated long ago. Directed jointly by revered French porn filmmaker Gérard Kikoïne and accredited master Radley Metzger (AKA Henry Paris), it was casually dismissed by critics upon its initial release, but the truth is that it holds up as an interesting hybrid of its authors' wildly divergent styles: a mix of delicate elegance and dirty sex. Though the pacing sometimes falters a bit, there's some brilliantly witty dialogue courtesy of Metzger, a master of elegant comedy. The production is solid, with soft lighting and professional photography by Gérard Loubeau, a renowned director of erotic films.

Radley Metzger's Audubon Films is credited with releasing the now-forgotten APHRODESIA"S DIARY, a pretty good example of the porno chic "couples films" being cranked out in the early '80s. It benefits from being shot on film, just as video was taking over, but weak scripting and other deficiencies are present. Filmmaker Gerard Kikoine swung both ways: he capably juggled both soft-core and hardcore assignments in his career and occasionally hit the bullseye: THE TALE OF TIFFANY LUST, with the same leading lady, lovely French star Dominique St. Claire. Unfortunately St. Claire gives a blank performance as heroine recounting her past romantic encounters in a needlessly dull series of vignettes set in both Manhattan and France. She's a country girl Adrianne, first seen in flashback on the farm, headed for Paris as her boyfriend Alain also leaves to start a career away from the sticks. In Paris an old guy Andre recruits her to work on a porn film for $500 but oddly enough she is the script girl rather than performer, and he pays her off with a 1-way plane ticket to NYC.

As the '70s gave way to the '80s, Gérard Kikoïne was one of the forces to be reckoned with in the French porn industry. While former "regular" filmmakers like Claude Bernard-Aubert (a/k/a "Burd Tranbaree") and Jean-Claude Roy (a/k/a "Patrick Aubin") contented themselves with naughty yet ultimately moral tales of cheating wives and philandering husbands who always got their comeuppance in the final reel, Kikoïne – along with Francis Leroi and Alain Payet – occupied an altogether more disquieting position within the genre, unnerving the largely bourgeois clientèle of the average dirty movie palace at the time with his almost casual perversion. Unlike most of his colleagues, he'd had no (unsuccessful) mainstream career prior to his porno work. Perhaps as a result, the obvious disdain displayed by other directors towards these movies (and, by extension, their audience) was totally absent from his. Apart from the groundbreaking movie magazine "La Revue Du Cinéma", very few publications actually bothered to praise Kikoïne's efforts, though they were invariably of great interest as both cinema and erotica and there's evidence of considerable evolution in their maker's expertise over the years. Consequently, when Kikoïne got the opportunity to work on the fringes of the mainstream movie-making community (EDGE OF SANITY, BURIED ALIVE), he all but disowned his porno past, not out of shame but out of frustration for this scandalous lack of critical recognition.

I believe even its auteur Shaun Costello would agree that HEAVEN'S TOUCH does not measure up to his best work. It's basically a polished version of the farces he cranked out in the '70s as 1-day wonders, but its polish has diluted the verve and lively qualities of the cheap antecedents. It's a riff on Warren Beatty's HEAVEN CAN WAIT but without writer Buck Henry's inventiveness. Costello makes the same structural mistake as that famous film, namely when hero Michael Knight is given the opportunity by angelic guide Veronica Hart (non-sex role) to live on after death in other men's bodies, he looks exactly the same throughout, just like Warren Beatty did. (Obviously he should look like the inhabited body's person, as that is what all the other characters see and what we the audience should see.) Complications from this charade are predictable and unfunny, despite good performances by Sharon Kane and Ron Jeremy as schemers who want the guy Knight takes over to die (from strenuous sex) and leave them his money. They're so anxious they even hire Carlotta (Kelly Nichols), a suspected husband-killer, to kill their mark with sex for the tidy paycheck of $1 million.

A bucolic Swedish countryside setting is used by the great Sarno to present a delightful erotic-pornographic comedy, played by the accordion. In this film, a group of villagers (all played by amateur actors) spend Midsummer Day arguing about the authenticity of certain Viking legends, which imbue the local women with an unexpected lust thanks to the sound of an ancient horn. This is a period device that the most shameless woman in town uses to enervate the sexuality of every female, including a religious missionary, skeptical of the anecdotes and too pious to participate in certain games. But the truth is that the horn works, and they all end up becoming intimate with each other naturally, without prejudice or remorse.
New Yorker Joseph W. Sarno escapes to the Swedish landscape to film a very wholesome and fun story, which includes several explicit numbers (although a less hard-edged erotic version was also released), including an unexpected fisting by the more mature, but no less fiery, protagonist. You won't see models with sculpted bodies or stars of the adult film scene here, but precisely that circumstance, the nature of the Nordic curves, and the good narrative rhythm make "Fäbodjäntan" a film hard to forget.

To offer a different point-of-view from the Belgian revisionist who handles Euro porn on IMDb, I found this "Burd Tranbaree" feature less than enthralling, it resembling generic vintage porn from the continent. Certainly folks who dig orgies and don't like heavy characterizations or the sturm und drang of "serious" Adult Cinema will cotton to it, but I found the prolific pornographer facile and simple-minded, as usual. Basic premise could fit any 1-day wonder circa 1971, made in the USA rather than the French product that followed 5 years later, of a wife who doesn't dig sex, though there are seemingly no other fractures in her marriage. The hubby is perennially horny, but all things turn out fine in that he gradually inculcates her to appreciate trying out new things and enjoying humping, with attending swingers' clubs and parties doing the trick. Episodic feature quickly devolves into all-sex format, with over a dozen sex scenes packed into an 84-minute running time.

Helen (Carole Nash) and Camillo (Jesse Eastern) like to play games in the bedroom. But she seems to be growing tired of his preoccupation with her behind when it comes to sex. When she finds out he is cheating on her with her friend Viola (Andrea Molnar) - and is taking her in the missionary position to boot - Helen answers the advances of Massimo Bini (Rocco Siffredi). But then she only lets him take her from behind too. So what was the point of that? Also in the mix is Deidre Holland as Andriana, who enjoys rock hard Rocco so much she even gets excited by watching him with other women (namely Helen). Less successful is Victor (Jon Dough) who doesn't get beyond a big wet kiss from Helen and has to settle for his secretary instead. However, Helen does reveal Viola's adultery to him later on, so he can at least blackmail Molnar into having sex with him.
It all comes down to a lot of rich people screwing each other over, followed by them screwing each other for real. And most often than not, from behind. Luckilly it features three of the most beautiful female Europorn stars of the Nineties: Nash, Holland & Molnar, all of whom get several scenes, including a lot of great big close-ups of their bare behinds.

Sensational staging, and a blatantly feminist look at the sexual adventures of the most daring students at Townsend, a school for young ladies. The cinematographic resources of Lease (a renowned actress for adults, who here directs under the name Joanna Williams) are evident, not only in the special montages that superimpose different shots to explain a thought or a dream, but in the ability to mix small subtle and irreverent gags while the surreal brushstrokes merge with the plot. Bill Matchton's music, with the whisper of a harp and the sound of Rhodes, fits perfectly in the different sexual sequences, but also in those that surprise with a transition or original and fun sequences.
Little Girls Blue was approaching the end of a decade that was glorious for adult cinema, and the homage paid to the schoolgirl fetish closes here a paradigm that was not repeated with the second part, 5 years later.

Between the traditional territory of rape-revenge dramas (which were a staple of the 1970s) and intelligent comedy, Joy remains an incongruous hybrid that has lost little of its power to disturb adult audiences and shake them out of their carnal complacency. Furthermore, Sharon Mitchell was supposedly underage when this film was being shot, and its release was delayed until after her 18th birthday. Like most New York-set sexploitation films, Joy benefits greatly from its realistic, filthy settings—as unlikely a setting for a paradise of pleasure and desire as you'd imagine.

Kemal Horulu's THE SEXUALIST is more akin to those mainstream Hollywood nutso movies like SKIDOO and HIERONYMUS MERKIN than typical porn, and will appeal mainly to people who are open-minded about what is funny. I found it silly, and cheating in the XXX department. In fact, though she's buried near the bottom of the cast list (and not due to alpha order), Tina Russell is really the porn star of the movie, delivering actual hardcore footage in tandem with her hubby Jason. She doesn't get any lines or character to play, just the film's true raison d'etre -it's porn after all. Star is of course Jennifer Welles, just before she decided to go "all the way" and handle XXX scenes herself. In SEXUALIST she is a lesbian actress, tired of toiling in director Dale T. Fuller's pretentious porn movies, and just about to be shoved aside, ALL ABOUT EVE-style, by newcomer Shana O'Neal, fresh in Manhattan from the Long Island.

Though the "couples film" craze didn't properly take off until the early '80s, when they were massively hyped and promptly died (at least in terms of quality), this sub-genre has been present in embryonic form since the dawn of theatrical porn and more specifically the Mitchell Brothers' classic BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR in 1972. The late Sam Weston (a/k/a "Anthony Spinelli") had some mainstream experience as a producer, funding Larry Peerce's then groundbreaking interracial romance ONE POTATO, TWO POTATO with the brilliant Barbara Barrie in 1964. He was also the brother of popular comedian and character actor Jack Weston. In his subsequent sexploitation and hardcore porn efforts, he always attempted to add those qualities readily associated with Hollywood studio releases, such as credible characterization, professional acting standards and occasionally ostentatious production value, in this case the renting of a private plane seemingly piloted by lead actress Amber Hunt. Speaking of whom, Hunt had caused quite a stir as Hustler magazine's November '75 "Honey", which is their version of Pets and Playmates, on the strength of which she was cast in this, her acting debut. A wide-eyed beauty possessed by a demonic sexuality (witness her fist-taking abilities yup, you read that right ! in Bob Chinn's classic doctors 'n' nurses romp CANDY STRIPERS).
