Authorship of the original Satan WAS A LADY is definitely that of Doris Wishman; no one could imitate her style as accurately as this hardcore porn film approximates. Its strange non sequiturs, goof-ball cutaway shots, telltale tacky decor and even the great woman's voice on the soundtrack spell DW heaven. The fact that she sort of remade it in a 2001 release as a "hip" (with lots of live music) softcore opus to which she signed her name proves the point. Before I get to the spoilers, namely the one-of-a-kind finale, here's the rundown on the hour-plus setup of non-action. There's an opening direct sound sequence of Victor & Claudia in bed having pre-marital sex. When Annie Sprinkle as Terry arrives, catching them in the act, her voice-over: "My sick little sister Claudia" sounds uncannily like Wishman's voice. I had the privilege of doing a phone interview with Doris in the '80s (for Variety newspaper), and it sounds like her.

In pornography, there seemingly is no such thing as rape: it existed in Adult Cinema from the '70s, but due to censorship a rape scene in current porn is fudged by having the women implicitly consent and more significantly "enjoy" the forced sex. Among the earliest Marc Dorcel releases, this made-for-video feature directed by Marc himself features two rape scenes, both of which have the ladies initially fighting against the attacker but ultimately going orgasmic and enthusiastically participating in the XXX action. The movie takes an amoral stance, essentially endorcing the cads' actions. Screenplay, uncredited, defies audience expectations, perhaps merely to pander to a male audience. Setting is a bar where a married couple (Helene Shirley and Richard Allan) chat while the "bad guy" Gabriel Pontello plays on an "Incredible Hulk" pinball machine nearby (yes, back in 1980 Marvel was already popular in France). He slips a note to the wife, and subsequently when she's feeling neglected by her husband, she phones Pontello and invites him to visit her. Upon arrival he immediately assaults her and has sex with her. As Pontello is smoking a cigar post-sex, the husband returns early and catches them nude on the couch, and he hits his wife in anger.

Fred Lincoln will always be best remembered for his role as Weasel in Wes Craven's 1972 shocker but what most people don't know is that Lincoln has over three-hundred director credits to his name. These are all hardcore flicks with these two being released as a double-feature from Alpha Blue Archives. SAME TIME EVERY YEAR has three male friends going on the same business trip each and every year. That's just what they tell their wives as they're really getting away to have some fun with other women. Their wives aren't very faithful either. A PLACE BEYOND SHAME features Seka playing, well herself, a woman who can't stand to have a man touch her. Her best friend recommends she go see a shrink and before long she's back in action. Neither one of these films are going to be talked about as hardcore classics but I guess, to be fair, their are prime examples of those low-budget items that were probably making a killing on VHS back in the early part of the 80s.

Top model Babe (the beautiful Tara Aire) learns of her beloved grandfather's death via telegram, just moments after allowing photographer Roger (the brilliant Ron Jeremy) to indulge her in his rather insistent pursuit. Since the old man was deeply concerned about his granddaughter's well-being, he stipulated in his will that she would only inherit his vast fortune if she married within one month of his death. Eager to get her hands on the money, Babe begins a series of casting calls to find a man who would accept the marriage as a sort of business arrangement. But her employer, Dory (the sensational Samantha Fox), isn't too pleased to see how her "golden goose" could give up her modeling career after acquiring such a fortune. So she plans to marry her off to Chad, a dimwitted aspiring actor obsessed with producing a singing, all-nude Broadway version of "Oedipus Rex." This initially seems like a bottomless pit of investment and a lack of audiences for his millionaire wife, Babe, who would need to go back to work to survive.
If you guessed that Babe realizes she loves Chad just as her absurd show becomes a popular and critical success, then you're right. However, reaching this inevitable conclusion is half the fun. The production is very solid, with brilliant cinematography, as are most of the performances. Tara Aire exudes a convincing perversity that doesn't contradict her in front of the audience, and Fox demonstrates her always-attractive side, even while maliciously plotting. The sex works very well within the parameters of couple carnality, and Samantha Fox comes closest to obscenity in a threesome with her lackeys. There are some strange digressions, such as when Babe orders two lovers to strip and masturbate for her benefit, which seems to orient the film more toward female viewers or a gay audience.

The good news about "The Naked Goddess", a forgotten porn project from 2 decades back, is that it was shot in 35mm and as an American vehicle for Italian star Moana Pozzi they hired the best in the business to direct, Gerard Damiano. Bad news is that it is perfunctory filmmaking, extremely unsatisfying given the practice at the time (especially in Europe, where the target audience for this one would be) of splitting films in two parts, making this Part One a completely unresolved cliffhanger.
Unlike cliffhangers in the Action film genre, this non-ending inspires no thrills, chills or anxiety, or impulse to want to see how it ends either. That's because Damiano's lame plot line concerns star Jonathan Morgan's sexual dysfunction, not the familiar erectile failure but rather an inability to cum. His fellow lawyer bud Buck Adams drags him for a weekend to The Château, where star Pozzi as title hooker supposedly will cure him.

Less personal than his early ground-breaking films, Damiano's finale THE NAKED GODDESS has the master working on autopilot but is nevertheless of interest. Buck Adams and Jonathan Morgan are the buddies whose cross-talk is less than scintillating. They're at a château run by Gloria Leonard, where Italian star Moana Pozzi is spotlighted - glamorously styled in an assortment of sex scenes.
Ostensible storyline has Buck trying to help out his pal who thinks he's gay. Morgan has sex with Moana but is unable to ejaculate, amplifying his fears. Pozzi's solution to try and cure him is a novel treatment -she will dress up as a man and have Jonathan hump her in the ass. If you think this makes no sense, wait till you see this dumb movie.

Candida Royalle has a juicy starring role here as a high-class prostitute (actually, much more than that) working for the mysterious Frisco man, John Carmichael (Jake Teague, in a gender-neutral role). Wealthy heiress Mabel Carter (an incestuous Marlene Willoughby) has hired them in a plan to get her spoiled son Marc (Jeremy Wyatt) to marry her, allowing her to regain control of the vast inheritance her late husband left in trust for Marc.
Shaun Costello's ability to tell fantastically believable stories ("Pandora's Mirror") is always worth considering, and "Sunny" fits the bill in this oxymoron, based on the desperation of an incestuous and manipulative mother to get what she wants at any cost. The script is well developed, but has some gaps that do not detract from the film's interest. Candida Royalle, better known now, decades later, as a feminist pornography director, is truly fantastic as Sunny, and conveys a morbidity rarely reflected in adult cinema.

The misadventures of three women in the same apartment building: Joelle finally manages to lose her virginity to her teacher, Hector, but they are discovered by her father, and she is evicted from home. Arlène has several misfortunes with men and comes to believe that they only want her for her money, until the caretaker confesses his love for her. The three women eventually become overwhelmed by their respective situations are invited to the apartment of a fourth tenant who organizes group sex parties.
This film remains a good example of the level of sophistication that French adult culture could have maintained, if the government of the time (Jacques Chirac) had not overwhelmed (punished) the "carnal sin" industry with ridiculously high taxes. Here, the narrative is simple and sophisticated at the same time, a personal paradigm of its director, the great Francis Leroi, who moved from filming softcore movies to hard-core commercials without shame and keeping his real name in the credits.
