Constantine Zuba was the Nom de Porn of my old friend Doug Collins. This film is a mystery to me. The cast is populated with people I knew well, and hired often. I do recognize some of the music. I'm certainly in it. My old friend and partner Bill Markle shot it. Bill's ancient Volkswagon Squareback is actually in a shot. But I just do not remember ever making a film about space or astronauts. It's not something I would write. It was made forty four years ago, so it's possible that I have simply forgotten making it. The sex scenes, while certainly acceptable, seem too busy and unchoreographed. They needed to be cleaner. The story telling is messy. Did I make it? Maybe. But I doubt it.

This was one of the adult blockbusters of 1985 when the Golden Age was drawing to a close. It was the directorial debut of Thomas Paine, who'd been working on the mainstream side of the movie industry and remains active in the adult part of it to this very day, and presented one of the best possible combinations of plot and porn ever concocted. The always underrated Tish Ambrose delivers a career performance as Jill, mother hen to a handful of call girls used (and that is the right word for it) by wicked Robert Bolla for corporate blackmail schemes. The other girls are fan favorites all, ranging from an unusually sweet and sensuous Amber Lynn to the elegantly debauched Rachel Ashley, hot off her triumph on Edwin Durell's EVERY WOMAN HAS A FANTASY. Most memorable though is the multi-award-winning Sheri St. Claire (Bob Bullock's object of obsession in Chuck Vincent's VOYEUR) as new kid Babette who soon learns the ins and outs of Bolla's set-up the hard way. Though the story's involving, it may disconcert some viewers that there is occasional violence to be found, sometimes in conjunction with the sex. Nowadays the adult industry tends to avoid such mixture for legal reasons and I understand that the current video version omits some of the nastier stuff that befalls St. Claire's character even though I always felt that none of it was gratuitous and indeed essential to understand that character's evolution. Ah well... This should in no way discourage you from seeking out this beautifully made, very well-acted adult classic, a tribute to days gone by when the 'adult' tag meant more than just explicit sexual content.

Cecil Howard, who makes the best erotic movies ever, returns with his usual multi vignette production. Shot in New York, with lots of interesting shots that you may not even find in mainstram films, Howard is a true filmmaker, as opposed to being a pornographer. Tells of a bunch of folk and their interwined lives on New Years Eve. Veronica Hart, Samantha Fox, marlene Willoughby. and Vanessa del rio are very memorable. Aside from David Morris, none of the leading men are good looking, yet these ladies give incredible passionate sexual performacnes, as well as terrific acting jobs, particularly Hart and Marlene Willoughby. Hart and Fox are at the height of their legendary beauty. Foxtrot is def. recommended hardcore fair.

Bill Milling's follow-up - in his "Philip Drexler" incarnation - to his widely admired A SCENT OF HEATHER, a naughty rendition of Disney's MARY POPPINS (and, yes, to all you purists out there, I am aware that P.L. Travers wrote the source novel but pretty much everyone else associates the character with pretty Julie Andrews rather than the sour spinster as the author described her), may borrow several of his previous film's resources star Veronica Hart, same mansion but could hardly be more different in style and tone. In all its unforced playfulness, not to mention a generous helping of Hart hardcore her fans won't want to miss out on, it remains one of the most purely enjoyable early '80s adult comedies.

Howard Winters a/k/a "Cecil Howard" remains one of the finest erotic filmmakers ever, with a track record that includes the likes of NEON NIGHTS, SCOUNDRELS and the FIRESTORM trilogy. As a producer and erstwhile video distributor through his company Command Video, whose impressive back catalog is only just now being gradually released onto DVD in exemplary bells 'n' whistles editions, he has always been similarly dedicated to bringing out the best in fellow filmmakers such as Chuck Vincent (HEAVY LOAD), Roberta Findlay (with whom he co-directed FANTASEX) and Ron Sullivan a/k/a "Henri Pachard". While he had a considerable background in sexploitation with "roughies" like LUST WEEKEND and THE BIZARRE ONES, Sullivan had yet to cross the explicit barrier. Suffice it to say there would be no looking back as he went on to become one of the most talented and enduring directors within the adult industry. On a personal note, the very first porn flick I ever saw was one of his, the wonderful THE BUDDING OF BRIE, a sharp 'n' sexy send-up of ALL ABOUT EVE. So it only seems right that I should return the favor and review his first (hardcore) film.

A dazzling Annette Haven plays Monique, a recent widow whose husband she didn't particularly like. After his death, the deceased's lawyer reads the will, which stipulates that the wife must perform a series of sexual acts to access her inheritance. In a posthumous voicemail, the deceased reveals his wife's frigidity and avarice, as well as his determination to take revenge on her, even from beyond the grave. The demure and proper Monique is forced to commit all sorts of degrading acts to fulfill the conditions of the inheritance, and despite her initial resistance, she ends up enjoying the challenge.
This unjustly forgotten film with Annette Haven might seem like just another pornographic film, but it turns out to be an unpredictable offering within the genre. The most disturbing aspect is the sheer amount of sordidness surrounding the tasks imposed on Monique, in stark contrast to the good taste and elegance she exudes. The ending shows a liberated widow in bed with the lawyer, finding new and exciting ways to deal with her husband's ashes. "Soft Places" stands as one of the best-shot pornographic films of the 1970s.

Well-shot on film by Gary Graver, TOWER OF POWER is porn with a whole lot of story, limning the power struggles and backstabbing in corporate executive suites. It's not a spoiler to warn you that there is no ending, but instead a cliffhanger (right out of night-time soaps, which it vaguely resembles) as evidently a sequel was planned but never made. Angel stars as the wife of corp. executive John Leslie, and pic opens with them humping in bed. Annette Haven proves her acting chops as a conniving executive and Leslie's ex-girl friend. A board meeting sets up the central premise: R. Bolla announces that somebody is involved in corporate espionage, and the traitor will be found out and dealt with. Janey Robbins is Bolla's shrewish wife, jealous of his affair with his secretary. Yet we are treated to her patented deep throat technique on Bolla. Haven is domineering, bossing her live-in boy friend sub Herschel Savage, and plot's romantic concatenations include Robbins having incestuous sex with her half-brother Savage, as he murmurs "we're not kids anymore" and romantic music plays.

The story, such as it is, involves the girls at a model agency getting up to all sorts of naughtiness, mainly with the photographers. First Céline Gallone is brought to what is supposed to be just a glamour shoot by her mother. The mother is led away and the shoot soon turns into a paradigmatic session. But the central characters are played by Jane Baker and Julia Perrin, who not only get it on with their photographers but also with the masseurs at a gym. Most of the other females involved in the action are models, though Sophie Duflot plays a secretary to photographer Cyril Val (and her scene with him includes anal), Nicole Segaud seems to be the girlfriend of another and Carole, the assistant to the two young photographers. Some of the models don't get involved much in the action, except perhaps in the final orgy scene where most of the participants wear masks at first.

Pornographic motion pictures have always concentrated on the male perspective, on the fulfillment of male fantasies. Still, when the genre was young in the 1970s, French pornographers produces a number of pictures with at least a fleeting interest in the emancipation and discovery and development of female sexuality. Sadly, this isn't one of them. This film is as misogynous and sexist as they come. The lead character (played by Guy Royer) uses women only as instruments of fulfilling his sexual desires - and the women of his acquaintance are stupid enough to comply. In itself this is perhaps not too unusual for the genre, but here there is apparently nothing in it for the women. Note of curiosity: this is one of several flicks in which we can watch Guy's party trick of driving a car whilst being lovingly attended to in the groin region. P.S. Although this film is nowadays marketed as a Brigitte Lahaie film, she only has a minor part as a prostitute in a brothel.

Inspired, of course, by Harper Valley PTA, Vista Valley PTA puts Jessie St. James in the Barbara Eden role of a new teacher at a troubled small town high school. The original movie was a comedy based on a popular song. This time, we know from where the inspiration comes, but it's not so easy to label this as comedy, melodrama, or anything else. I suppose the term "porn" will have to suffice. Shot in the early 80's, Vista Valley PTA is considered a classic if only for it's age, but God bless NuTech Digital for releasing it despite it's dated look. What could have easily been a funny little piece of smutty fluff about cheerleaders and horny delinquents, this film instead is made up of individual moments one could describe as dramatic, comedic, and even disturbing. Jessie St. James takes top billing, but the movie is really about her various students and their always dysfunctional families. Dorothy LeMay is the slutty daughter of Juliet Anderson, who sports a proper exterior but harbors perverted thoughts. Kay Parker, the mother of another student, pushes her husband to the breaking point most nights because it makes the sex better. Most unsettling, though, is Jamie Gillis, who looks eerily like Cat Stevens here, but plays the part of a bible thumping fundamentalist who secretly visits prostitutes and harbors rapefantasies involving his teenage daughter, embodied by a very young Sharon Kane. Gillis doesn't play this lecherous character like an over the top zealot, but instead as a very troubled and confused man. Believe it or not, there's actual good acting afoot in this movie.

Once promising ballerina Maria Schmidt (a sturdy and moving portrayal by the stunning Hyapatia Lee) runs a prestigious dance school with her crippled and impotent husband Carl (a fine performance by Paul Thomas). Since Carl isn't capable of satisfying Maria's sexual needs, Maria has no choice but to seek carnal fulfillment from her students. Director Bob Chinn, working from a thoughtful script by Bud and Hyapatia Lee, handles the absorbing premise with commendable care and sensitivity while still delivering the sizzling goods. Moreover, this film serves as an ideal showcase for Hyapatia Lee both as an actress and a simply magnificent physical beauty: Hyapatia brings a touching pathos to her part, performs her sex scenes with scorching erotic aplomb (a lively threeway between her, Thomas, and fetching brunette Shanna McCullough rates as the definite steamy highlight), and even busts some sweet dance moves (she looks like a million bucks in a leotard, too). Juraj's funky-throbbing score hits the right-on gnarly spot. Jack Remy's sunny cinematography provides a nice sparkling look. A worthwhile hardcore movie.

Ned (John Leslie) can't keep his wife Mary (Constance Money) satisfied due to his premature ejaculation. When he wishes that he could last longer, a devil like person shows up and offers him a cream that will turn him into a stub but he must exchange his soul for it. MARY! MARY! is a film that I had never heard of until Vinegar Syndrome announced it for release. Quite often I don't like all of the films that they release but I always give them a try because the titles are usually at least interesting in their own way. Of course, they also release some real gems and that's exactly what this picture was. This falls into that "Golden Era of Porn" when stories could be interesting and the style even more so. What makes this film so good is that it's actually well-made and features a fairly interesting story for what it was. I thought there were some pretty funny scenes scattered throughout the picture including an early on where Ned is being satisfied under his desk and a friend shows up and just can't get the hint to leave. There's another sequence with a couple cops (including Rene Bond) that leads to some funny stuff and a rather impressive car chase sequence.

Set in Louisiana, this old-school porn feature by reliable filmmaker Stuart Canterbury has its awkward moments, but overall pumps life into that hoary plot gimmick of a magical love spell. Most interesting for me was the depiction of the two lead romantic characters as completely unlikable. Deidre Holland and Jon Dough can easily be charming, but here meet the challenge of behaving badly yet still challenging us to remain interested in them. They're co-workers at a firm run by Tony Tedeschi. Tony and his secretary/sex interest Brittany O'Connell (always a bright light in any porn video of the era) are the main players who attempt a Southern-fried accent, while director Canterbury does conjure up quality atmosphere in the bayou setting. Basically, Dough is infatuated with Holland but utterly inept at getting to first base with her. He's always doing the wrong thing and comes perilously close to being fired by Tony for sexual harassment with her. On a trip to a strip club (which features beauties P. J. Sparxx and Sunny McKay who put on lesbian sex shows on stage) he's accosted by an old coot played by character porn actor EZ Ryder who encourages him to visit a shack in the swamp to obtain a love spell from a witch. Dough is rude to Ryder, but desperate enough to take him up on this b.s.

I gave Carlos Tobalina one rave review (for 3 RIPENING CHERRIES) some time ago, but lately he's been batting .000 for me, with the DVD revival recently of one amateurish stinker after another. THE ULTIMATE PLEASURE is even less polished than usual, starring untalented leads in a stupid tale. Kristene Heller (a pretty but vapid actress this time out) and Jeff Lyle are the unhappy marrieds, introduced in fairly cryptic early scenes. Excuse for a story (never one of Tobalina's strong suits) has cabbie Jeff finding a suitcase full of money in the back seat and heading to Las Vegas to live it up with whore Annette Haven. Most of the action makes no sense at all, such as Jeff fired from his cab company, a scene of sitting on the toilet with gag sound effects dubbing (apparently a moronic Tobalina fetish, used previously to ill effect in MARILYN AND THE SENATOR) and various pointless sex scenes.
