Flawed but fascinating, MYSTIQUE offers a rare opportunity to witness the relentlessly morose universe of the late Roger Watkins of LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET infamy filtered through the sensibilities of another filmmaker. In this case Roberta Findlay, resorting to her male alter ego of "Robert W. Norman", thereby perhaps accidentally initiating an unofficial trilogy of the downbeat with A WOMAN'S TORMENT and THE TIFFANY MINX. While Watkins, fresh from wowing fans and critics alike with his dirty movie debut HER NAME WAS LISA, obviously remains the premium interpreter of his self-confessed inner turmoil, Findlay certainly gives it the old college try, gamely taking on board all of the author's lofty idiosyncrasies. For the film at hand, these include an opening quote from French existential poet Paul Valéry and borrowing the names of the wives of Gustav Mahler and Richard Wagner for his main characters where he, of course, gained genre notoriety as "Richard Mahler"!

Jerry Ross was a porn writer-producer who specialized in couples films that approximated real (mainstream) movies but with plenty of explicit sex included. This one starring John Leslie as a horny ghost is quite successful at providing content that could be called "family entertainment" if our society were truly open-minded, rather than Puritanical (and getting more so by the minute in the age of MAGA). With cutesy, uncredited nude angels in Heaven watching the feckless humans misbehaving below (only Ginger Lynn is obviously identifiable), we witness Leslie's comical and often sexy antics as a ghost after he's killed on his motorcycle by reckless driver Eric Edwards, a hit and run. Edwards is excellent as a detestable cad, who spends the rest of the movie doing casting couch auditions with pretty young women for a role to host a late-night cable soft porn show titled "Midnight Fantasies". An aspiring actress auditioning is star of the movie Desiree Lane, who's too timid to put out for Eric, but dates him anyway, while she's grieving for Leslie, who by coincidence was her guitarist boyfriend.

A young woman loses her job and finds money on the nightstand after a one nighter which is her introduction into prostitution. This hardcore effort from France is a real head turner. This one could best be boiled down as a roughie, but it's far more complicated than that. It's a hardcore picture where none of the sex is really presented as sexy, challenging the viewer to keep with it as the character study melodrama keeps ramping up and getting more extreme. So as a porn it may not be a total success to some looking for a wank, but it's a hell of a picture if you're looking for a sleazy drama.

To the surprise of his parents and the clergy, young Leo has an erection during his baptism. Leo goes to a specialist who tries to cure his problem by giving him pills to induce terrifying sexual dreams. In a series of episodes, Leo sleeps with several women, all with the same result: he can't down his erection. At an amusement park he picks one up and takes her home; another wants to be watched while she has sex with her own grandfather… Leo's problem persists, although it's not entirely serious, since his ailment comes in handy while he's painting and needs a place to hang his paint bucket… This comedy by Alan Vydra is hilarious and will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. “Born Erect” is a delightful excursion into sexual absurdity, with all the action the subject demands.

After watching filmmaker Peter Balakoff ego-trip his way through THE PSYCHIATRIST I was well prepared for his bloated ONE PAGE OF LOVE. He's back, as an unscrupulous psychiatrist again, but at least the sex scenes are stimulating. This Belgian director/"actor" seems to have had a screw loose, judging from the idiotic narrative line of this way-overboard 90-minute XXX effort. Premise is quite simple -a retarded beauty Manon (Gena Lee, also the star of THE PSYCHIATRIST) cared for by her younger sister Suzette (perennially underage-looking cult star Nancy Hoffman) and exploited by men due to her naive nymphomania. But Balakoff has a habit of presenting the dramatic setup portion of a scene and then arbitrarily (reminded me of sportscaster Warner Wolf's tag-line: "let's go to the videotape") cutting to hardcore sex at the payoff. It doesn't matter if the scene's protagonists are mad at each other or fighting -everything leads instantly to sex.
