Flawed but fascinating, MYSTIQUE offers a rare opportunity to witness the relentlessly morose universe of the late Roger Watkins of LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET infamy filtered through the sensibilities of another filmmaker. In this case Roberta Findlay, resorting to her male alter ego of "Robert W. For the film at hand, these include an opening quote from French existential poet Paul Valéry and borrowing the names of the wives of Gustav Mahler and Richard Wagner for his main characters where he, of course, gained genre notoriety as "Richard Mahler"!

Jerry Ross was a porn writer-producer who specialized in couples films that approximated real (mainstream) movies but with plenty of explicit sex included. This one starring John Leslie as a horny ghost is quite successful at providing content that could be called "family entertainment" if our society were truly open-minded, rather than Puritanical (and getting more so by the minute in the age of MAGA). With cutesy, uncredited nude angels in Heaven watching the feckless humans misbehaving below (only Ginger Lynn is obviously identifiable), we witness Leslie's comical and often sexy antics as a ghost after he's killed on his motorcycle by reckless driver Eric Edwards, a hit and run. Edwards is excellent as a detestable cad, who spends the rest of the movie doing casting couch auditions with pretty young women for a role to host a late-night cable soft porn show titled "Midnight Fantasies". An aspiring actress auditioning is star of the movie Desiree Lane, who's too timid to put out for Eric, but dates him anyway, while she's grieving for Leslie, who by coincidence was her guitarist boyfriend.

A young woman loses her job and finds money on the nightstand after a one nighter which is her introduction into prostitution. This hardcore effort from France is a real head turner. This one could best be boiled down as a roughie, but it's far more complicated than that. It's a hardcore picture where none of the sex is really presented as sexy, challenging the viewer to keep with it as the character study melodrama keeps ramping up and getting more extreme. So as a porn it may not be a total success to some looking for a wank, but it's a hell of a picture if you're looking for a sleazy drama.

After watching filmmaker Peter Balakoff ego-trip his way through THE PSYCHIATRIST I was well prepared for his bloated ONE PAGE OF LOVE. He's back, as an unscrupulous psychiatrist again, but at least the sex scenes are stimulating. This Belgian director/"actor" seems to have had a screw loose, judging from the idiotic narrative line of this way-overboard 90-minute XXX effort. Premise is quite simple -a retarded beauty Manon (Gena Lee, also the star of THE PSYCHIATRIST) cared for by her younger sister Suzette (perennially underage-looking cult star Nancy Hoffman) and exploited by men due to her naive nymphomania. But Balakoff has a habit of presenting the dramatic setup portion of a scene and then arbitrarily (reminded me of sportscaster Warner Wolf's tag-line: "let's go to the videotape") cutting to hardcore sex at the payoff. It doesn't matter if the scene's protagonists are mad at each other or fighting -everything leads instantly to sex.

1995, the all-female crew on board the Starship Eros get it on with each other when they aren't taking advantage of the virile services of their male robot servant Quasar (hardcore stud Mike Ranger wearing a shoddy C3PO mask). Writer/director Scott McHaley keeps the slight, yet still enjoyable story moving along at a snappy pace, makes the most out of the novel science fiction angle, and tops everything off with an amusing sense of blithely raunchy humor. The special effects are pretty good considering the modest budget. Better still, the gals are smoking hot: Buxom brunette Lily Rogers burns up the screen as the horny Commander Venus, the luscious Becky Savage likewise seriously sizzles as the equally lascivious Captain Christine Moon, and the adorable Beth Evans knocks the cuteness meter off the scales as the sweet Beth. Pablo Lepell's crisp cinematography gives this picture an attractive bright look. The funky synthesizer score hits the way groovy spot. The tight 67 minute running time ensures that this movie never gets dull or overstays its welcome.

This Golden Age flick deserves special attention, all other attributes aside, because it's one of only two feature films Julia Parton appeared in doing full blown -- sorry, couldn't resist -- hardcore. In fact, the only bj scene is in this movie, in Sex Games she was averse to oral for whatever reason. Julia is up there with Uschi Digart, Candy Samples, Roxy Brewer and Dyanne Thorne as iconic tit queens of that era and her foray into hardcore was sadly brief, at the very start of her career, when she still had a bit of that 'babyfat' look about her. Right after this film was made, she lost a few pounds, became more chiseled without losing any buxomness and only did g/g or solo scenes, along with some mainstream soft-core. Her poolside h/c loop is easily available for free online. When Julia and Mona Page finish with the lucky handyman, double teaming him with an oral money shot, it's the only time I know of that Julia Parton gets a facial.

Eric Edwards is among the most talented and recognizable charter members of Adult Entertainment's hall of fame, but this donning of the filmmaker's hat is as successful as it is unexpected. I've seen a couple of other Edwards-directed features that are strictly routine, but the care and creativity shown here is amazing. One other must-see Edwards-helmed title is the romantic fantasy "Soft Warm Rain". Edwards shares credit with co-scripter Rene Summers, who also appears on screen in a supporting role. The subject matter is Victorian erotica, my favorite porn genre by far and one that has not been done to death, only a handful of titles released over the years. This one seems to have been lost amidst drek that dominated the marketplace in the '80s, as it does in the gonzo 21st Century so far. Key element is casting Krista Lane as the leading lady, a romance novelist who moves into an old house with a reputation of being haunted. It's the best role of Krista's career and she makes the most of it.

A good example of director Joe Sarno's ability to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, this is probably the best of the slew of micro-budgeted mid-Eighties features he made for then fledgling home entertainment honcho Video-X-Pix.Silly plot is completely salvaged by superior sex scenes, with full evidence of Sarno's knack for cast chemistry and, shall we say, "in depth" coverage ! Philandering Klaus Multia (a German performer usually entrusted with as little dialog as possible in Ron Sullivan's SEX SPA USA and PUSSYCAT GALORE and early Femme features) has gone missing and the ladies in his life want him back as – to quote Woody Allen – "he was the best time they ever had without laughing". Current fiancée Carol Cross enlists the aid of jaded private eye Honey Wilder and together they make the rounds of friends, acquaintances and usual suspects to ascertain the red hot lover's current whereabouts. Delicious Danielle, whom the title could be in reference to, exits the movie far too soon as the P.I.'s very hands on secretary though not before she pulls off a lusty liaison with Joey Silvera (paired for neither first nor last time) and a scorching threesome with Wilder and hunky Michael Knight.

This movie's based on Oscar Wilde's ironically timeless "Picture of Dorian Gray", using that narrative as a framework to spoof a number of Hollywood classics and their iconic stars Cagney, Bogart and Brando. Commencing at a present day pool party where no one seems to know the host, lusty Linda (radiant yet criminally underrated Lesllie Bovee) retreats to the palatial mansion with cowboy Ray (stalwart Eric Edwards) for nookie when she accidentally turns on an old movie projector. Before their disbelieving eyes unspools a reel of passionate poking between a 1920's flapper and her decrepit old lover. Losing Ray once they're out of the house, Linda finally meets their host, handsome Darrin Blue (the late Wade Nichols, who passed away from AIDS in 1985) who begins to tell her his strange life story. Young lover of free-thinking socialite Henrietta (another award-winning turn from the legendary Georgina Spelvin) in 1922, he was first confronted with his youthful beauty – the value thereof his mistress never failed to emphasize – when she had their lovemaking surreptitiously filmed by her chauffeur. As the more mature Henrietta bemoans the inevitable decay that time will bring, Darrin utters the wish that not he but his image on film should age instead. So be it.

There are few references to Greek exploitation cinema, not only online but also in any physical or digital archive, that at least corroborate that the production company Olympus Film was one of the most prolific in Greece during the rise of adult films in the early 1980s, distributing its titles primarily on VHS and in "X" cinemas. According to some historical records of Greek erotic cinema of the time (the genre known as "tsonta"), the plot of "O kyrios kathigitis" (which literally translates as "Mister Professor") follows the classic structure of the genre: a middle-aged professor who maintains a public image of rectitude and academic authority, while his routine life is disrupted by his interactions with the young female students (and some female professors as well) in his immediate circle, situations that awaken his repressed desires. As expected, the narrative unfolds through a series of explicit sexual encounters that explore the power dynamics between the teacher and the students, breaking the taboos of the educational institution and revealing the protagonist's double standards. Nothing we haven't seen a thousand times before, but this time with the hellenic language as a subjective transgression.
