NEVER SO DEEP presents a return to burlesque territory director Damiano explored in his earlier, less pretentious work like MEATBALL and duh ! DEEP THROAT. It's a welcome reminder that he can kid around with the best of them and a sterling sex flick to boot.
Private eye Ginger Trueheart (fan favorite Loni Sanders, star of Shaun Costello's all too aptly named BEAUTY) and sidekick Sam Strong (her then real life husband Mike Ranger) are summoned to the mansion of girlie magazine magnate Huge Heffer (veteran performer Paul Thomas, who played Peter under his real name in Norman Jewison's Jesus Christ SUPERSTAR !) with the assignment to track down a girl he met one drunken night. All he remembers is the butterfly tattoo on her butt and her uncanny ability to down great lengths of the male sex organ ! This zany premise takes our heroes to the seamier side of San Francisco in the early 80s with all sorts of hot action along the way.

Levi Richards gives a compelling performance as a ne'er-do-well gambler in LADY LUCK, a long-forgotten XXX picture recently unearthed by Alpha Blue Archives, on a tribute DVD to Eve Orlon.
When he's not at the races playing the ponies, Rick is cheating on his wife Lucy (Eve Orlon), pretending to her that he's got a poker night out with his buddies. Romance hits him when he befriends a lovely, bosomy girl at the racetrack and film actually builds some sympathy for its central characters.
But this is ultimately 1-day wonder porn, innocently presented in that the clichés and hard & fast rules had not yet set in (in 1971, pre-DEEP THROAT, hardcore features were still in their infancy). RIc Lutze pops up as Bill, who is humping Lucy while Rick's away.
Nothing much happens but this one plays like a real film, including actual on-location race track footage. A nice try, but lacking the basics of screen writing 101 regarding story arc, protagonist vs. antagonist and elements to create and sustain one's interest in the narrative.

Watching "Julie" alongside director Jean-Luc Brunet's "Les culottes de Charlotte" one sees a peculiar porn sensibility at work. Though these movies aimed at the then-new video market are trifles, they stand as interesting artifacts from the early years of Marc Dorcel, the dominant French Adult producer.
Julie is raped a couple of times over the course of this simple story, running slightly less than an hour long. Key event is her bike hit by porn stalwart Gabriel Pontello's limousine, with both he and his chauffeur Jean-Pierre Armand having their way with the young girl.
Wife of the manor Cathy Menard also figures prominently in the scenario, and after all the sexual violence, the movie ends with an artificial happy ending as Julie bids adieu to her less than hospitable hosts to ride home on her bike.
Obaya Roberts as Julie is unimpressive as the rather plain waif, upstaged by the beauty of the landscape and a luxurious chateau location. Brunet's audience manipulation is the main point of interest here.

Chief mystery is why the anonymous cast is predominantly European, with Germanic accents. Exception is lead villain playing Marco but boasting a southern Good Ole Boy accent -this sinister fellow resembles current character actor Michael Shannon (no insult intended to MS). He hypnotizes people by drugging their drinks on something of a referral service (I guess hypnotism was making a periodic comeback circa 1977 as a diversion), and has them get sexually aroused during the trance.
That's the entire plot hook for this roughly hour long programmer, which has lost considerable footage in the scratchy, splicey print preserved by SWV. There's an attempt at banter and one-upsmanship with his assistant Stella, but after an exceedingly dull first couple of reels devoted to their next victims Betty and David in which we watch them make love first outdoors and then in the shower, the film devolves into illustrations of fantasies. The fantasies are generally 3-ways, one in an antique store and another in the dressing room of "ballerinas" (no dancing is shown).

The only question I had before watching this movie was to conclude if this producer can offer movies whose stories are something else that a woman trapped by wealthy men, in other words else than trafficking ! Here, it's indeed not a trafficking story but it stays totally crap and illegal : in short, Laure is a runaway woman who is abused if not raped and who finds herself in prostitution. Frankely, this french producer is thus disgusting and consider women as mere sex toys. I suppose it reflects our french society but let me say that i find it decadent and alienating. Sure, Laure is a incredible babe but i can't praise such movies. Finally, maybe American productions are better because they don't indulge in that filth.

After three decades, this still remains something of a flagship title from the back catalog of one time French porn theater mogul Alpha France, largely due to the fact that it proved one of its most profitable pictures. With all these (sometimes) golden oldies being released onto shiny little discs in twosomes and threesomes bit by bit, younger generations can find out what all the ballyhoo was about. Paired with its superior sequel LE RETOUR DES VEUVES, this distinctly minor classic actually has trouble living up to its reputation. Not that it turns out to be such a terrible film, far from it, just that there's a leaden feel to much of its intended farce when the material should have been whipped up into a frothy meringue. Unfortunately, this was a trademark for its director Claude-Bernard Aubert (a/k/a "Burd Tranbaree"), who seemed more at home when tackling more serious-minded fare like LE DROIT DE CUISSAGE or L'INITIATION D'UNE FEMME MARIÉE. It barely helps that the audience identification male protagonist - who, like the redoubtable Ghislain Van Hove in Aubert's much more effective LA RABATTEUSE, partakes in every single sex scene - is played by an annoyingly smug Charlie Schreiner. At least, he makes up in stud duties for what he lacks in charisma.

Francis Mishkind's Alpha France was THE porn production company to be reckoned with, both in terms of quantity and quality, during the French equivalent of adult's Golden Age. With a string of self-owned theaters to showcase them, his output remained on constant display (through occasional re-titlings) until theatrical porn pretty much collapsed around the mid-eighties. Even then, video (and now DVD) sales kept most of these titles very much in the public eye, reinforcing the old Alpha France logo as a sign of superior quality.
While call girl Claire (the radiant Marilyn Jess) awaits her next client in her fancy New York hotel room (exterior shots probably shot by Kikoïne while he was over there making THE TALE OF TIFFANY LUST and APHRODESIA'S DIARY back to back that same year), she remembers how she got there. Unable to have sexual relations of any kind since she was raped (unseen) by her boorish father (Jacques Marbeuf, somehow perfect for the part...), she meets the mysterious Laurence (exotic Mika Barthel), "Lola" to her friends (hence the film's best known retitling as ADORABLE LOLA), who fled the country a decade earlier due to a similar fate as well as an incestuous attraction to her now dead dad.

"Beauty" is one of my favorite Shaun Costello feature films, notable for a commitment to the material that avoids the facetiousness that seems endemic to most porn, and certainly to his comedies. Casting, performances and film technique are all top-notch.
Loni Sanders shines in the title role, balancing a naiveté with a winning sexual display. The material is adapted to the current scene so well that it does not seem derivative like most updates of fables and has a timeless quality thanks to its rather moving execution. I saw it theatrically in NYC in February 1983 and it holds up extremely well three decades after. I watched it again on DVD via an Erica Boyer revival -she doing a great job of preserving winners ("Artemisia" is another example she's picked).

Celebrating its 30th anniversary at this moment of writing, Gerard Damiano's most ambitious and metaphor-filled movie has stood the test of time rather well, presumably because it was ahead of its time back when it originally came out. The film opens ominously with the caption how in the beginning we are born, in the end we die and the middle is called life. Immediately, you're aware that this is not going to be your typical, run of the mill fornication flick even as it follows a traditional vignette structure, splitting things up into three separate episodes, roughly corresponding to the aforementioned birth/life/death triptych. Each segment has its own tone, beautifully communicated through intricate writing and accomplished acting, along with its appropriate visual style courtesy of for once NOT ace cinematographer and back then Damiano regular Joao Fernandez (a/k/a "Harry Flecks") but the otherwise rather undistinguished Beyen C. Mitchell of LET MY PUPPETS COME infamy, further enhanced by a superb score mixing original music with library tracks with Johnny Pearson's popular "Sleepy Shores" employed to particularly haunting effect.

Fringe filmmaker Stephen Sayadian (a/k/a "Rinse Dream") followed his groundbreaking NIGHTDREAMS with this even more radical foray into expressionist erotica. Set in a post-nuclear future, the "bomb" has left 99 % of the world population unable to have sexual intercourse, becoming violently ill whenever this is attempted, with the remaining 1 % forced to perform for their benefit in dank, dark night spots such as the titular Café Flesh, run by the friendly but firm "Moms" (sympathetically portrayed by cult figure and soon to become carnal queen Tantala, billed as "Darcy Nichols"). From his single brightly lit spot on the stage, MC Max Melodramatic (an astonishing performance by Andrew Nichols) mercilessly teases and taunts the incapacitated audience flooding the club night after night, both his presence and the garish shows cruelly reminding them of the intimacy they are no longer capable of. Among them, Nick and Lana (Paul McGibbonney and "Pia Snow" a/k/a grade B horror favorite Michelle Bauer) who are desperately trying to hang on to their once loving relationship now perhaps fatally handicapped by the enforced absence of physical closeness. Unbeknown to Nick though, Lana is a closet Sex Positive, feigning sickness so as not to lose out on love through an obligatory stage career. The arrival of small town girl Angel (the very pretty Marie Sharp from Vinnie Rossi's insipid FOREPLAY) and her delighted response to being pressed into pornographic theatrical duty, makes Lana doubt her decision. As she yields to a desperate masturbation bit in the café's kitchen, Max spying on her effectively blows her cover. A much anticipated guest performance by legendary super stud Johnny Rico (the late Kevin James, such a motor mouth in Fred Lincoln's MITZI'S HONOR, in an uncharacteristically silent turn) causes Lana to lose her cool and join him and Angel on stage for a fantasy-fulfilling finale.

There's no need for THREE FACES OF ANGEL, a long-forgotten attempt to cash in on the popularity in the '80s of this beautiful (too beautiful??) porn star. Compilation has poor sound synch but succeeds in showing the cutie in action.
Format is a scrapbook, with voice-over of a letter to reminisce, and show Angel sex scenes from previous films. That's it, with no attempt at any sort of significance or wrap-up ending.
Footage chosen is routine, quite a bit from the ski resort movie TOO HOT TO TOUCH, so that Kay Parker can give the fans a thrill. The oddest sequence failed to stump me (though it was fairly obscure and a good test): Angel is substituted in new footage (plus re-dubbing) for original actress Jacqueline Giroux who was the person on the phone with John Leslie during his classic casting couch hump with 1-shot beauty Eva Housman, excerpted from Anthony Spinelli's SKIN ON SKIN. If I hadn't seen that film recently I would have been in trouble, but the real question is why bother? Angel as a voice on the phone is hardly memorable, but of course Eva was, so apparently they wanted to reuse her footage somehow and stretched a point in order to shoehorn it into an Angel retrospective.
