"I Tyrens tegn" (In the Sign of the Taurus) is the second of six films in the Danish adult zodiac series, and this time it tells the hilarious story of a small Danish town where Count Lieberhaus, a dirty old billionaire and generous benefactor of the town whose citizens he exempts from all taxes, suddenly dies, causing much sadness and issuing a well-written legacy to be read by the town council: he will bequeath his entire fortune to the first child born out of wedlock under the sign of Taurus, provided that, when they reach adulthood, they remain in the town, spreading the same generosity that he did. Should the birth occur outside the time limits of the required zodiac sign, the fortune will go directly to the "Association for the Protection of Homeless Kittens" in Copenhagen. The problem is that the people shelter themselves from sin under the sacred umbrella of decency and moral integrity, and the late count's desires for adultery blatantly violate the ethical precepts of the conservative political establishment.

Anthon Master (the clown Ole Søltoft) plays the lead role of a record executive who wants to sign a hot singer exclusively to his label, the star Dolores Rossi (a gorgeous Cia Löwgren, in her prime, who, despite participating in this "pornographic" project, merely shows some skin from the waist up), so he tries to seduce her first, to get the upper hand. The problem is that when the competing label learns that Anthon has an identical twin brother named Benny, they kidnap Anthon and replace him with him to stand in for the negotiations (with prior instructions and subterfuge), thus ensuring that they sabotage the real Anthon's relationship with Dolores, preventing her from signing the record contract in favor of the other candidate label, headed by the histrionic Ulrik Ulvenstein, the mastermind of the Machiavellian and stupid plan.

A pair of venerable old women, dedicated to writing romance novels that publishers no longer want to publish (given the shift towards more risqué and unorthodox literature), are forced to rethink the plots of their works and decide to base them on their own libertine experiences from their youth, when they worked (quite literally) in the service of the progressive and charming Count Johan, now deceased, and cousin of the current Count Hubert, a grumpy and conservative politician and founder of the so-called "Moral Rearmament Fund." He, by chance, discovers the extensive "immoral" documentation that the two young women had compiled in their time, and which now, many years later, will serve as the basis for the old women's new stories, based on real (and very steamy) events. In an effort to preserve their reputation as authors of "honest literature," the elderly women decide to publish their work under the name of their nephew, Tony Bram, since the young man lives abroad and is easy to keep out of the loop. But when the books become a resounding success, the press descends upon Tony, who, of course, has no idea what's going on.

A secret spy agency run by a guy named "Scorpio," operating out of a health food store, receives an order from the CIA to arrange the delivery of plans containing the formula for replacing solid fuels. The beautiful spy Mata Hari (Gina Janssen) sends her incredibly dim-witted son to intercept the delivery to get revenge on him for killing the father of her child years earlier. Really, the only interesting thing about this (besides being the hardcore debut of Anna Bergman, Ingmar's daughter) is that the opening sex scene between Mata Hari and her lover might be the only hardcore porn sequence in history that leads to an actual conception (within the plot, of course).
This is probably the best of the mid-70s Danish porn comedies, combining genuine attempts at slapstick comedy with equally original hardcore porn. It's a film of enormous value for its extravagance, enthusiasm, and energy, and Anna Bergman seems to have had a body double for the more explicit scenes, while the gorgeous Gina Jansen simply does it herself. European spy parodies were very popular in the 1960s, but by the late 1970s they seemed quite outmoded, not to say unnecessary, as the "serious" 007-style versions had practically descended into self-parody. In the six-part zodiac series starring the clown Ole Søltoft, this is the one dedicated to the sign of Scorpio, and it's the fifth and penultimate installment.

A real bastard of a movie with Jess Franco and Joe D'Amato sharing directing credit. In 1975 Franco started shooting a version of de Sade's Justine, which was to be a remake of his 1968 film. The production ran out of money with only a handful of scenes shot so the production company brought in D'Amato to edit together this footage with two other Franco films (Midnight Party and Shining Sex). The end result is a real mixed bag because it really doesn't work as a film but it does work as a "greatest hits" of various sex scenes with Lina Romay. Romay was certainly in her prime while these three films were shot so she's easy on the eyes and Franco, as usual, captures her sexual nature quite well making for some very erotic scenes. D'Amato added a music score from his Black Emanuelle films, which was a nice touch.

With little budget (as the Austrian movie "industry" unfortunately has) obviously a director has to walk with different shoes than Hollywood. "Antares" is a good example of how to make the best of it. In my point of view very often certain narrative concepts become so much in the thick of things, that characters turn secondary (I don't mean to say I don't like pictures which walk that way). IMO it is refreshing to see movies which succeed not to abstract too much, movies which do not take away too much from their characters because for example various storytelling concepts are requiring it. With "Antares" for ~115minutes you get insight into various living conditions in Austria before something crucial happens. You see how people are, what their main problem is. And yes of course there is a clear idea behind this picture, but as I said before this idea is not imposed on the viewers. Solitude and isolation are crucial topics in "Antares". The entanglement of life's is another.

A group of women are having fun and working at their local whorehouse when the police storm the building and arrest them all. They are sent to a prison located on an island cut off from the rest of the world and it doesn't take long for them to fall victim to the evil warden (Karine Gambier) and her rapist guards. Also known under its original title, GEFANGENE FRAUEN and ISLAND WOMEN, this film came pretty late in the whole WIP (women-in-prison) movement. I've often said that if you've seen on WIP movie then you've seen them all. The only difference in them is the level of cruelty that they will go for. To me Jess Franco's BARBED WIRE DOLLS is the best of the lot but CAGED WOMEN deserves a lot of credit as well. The film was written and directed by Erwin C. Dietrich, the long time producer for several Franco classics including BARBED WIRE DOLLS. He certainly knew what he wanted to deliver and this here is pretty much a remake of that film. With that being said, this movie is without question one of the most gratuitous movies in the genre. I say that because the sleaze factor is pretty much off the charts and especially when it comes to the sexuality and nudity.

Helene (Valerie Boisgel) goes to visit an old flame but she's told by another man that he is busy with another woman. After some back and forth, Helene and the new guy strike up a sexual encounter and all is going well until a group of thugs break into the house.
LA VILLA, released on DVD under the title HELENE, is a French adult movie that apparently has a cult following by some people. I'm not exactly sure who these people are as I found the film to be rather boring even with its short 73-minute running time. The film was obviously meant to be shocking but to me it was just to poorly made to leave any sort of impression.
I guess I'd argue that Boisgel was the best thing in the film as she was at least easy on the eyes and I'd probably also say that she turned in a fine performance. I thought she was quite good in the role and she was at least believable for what the part asked of her. None of the supporting players really jumped out at me but this might have been due to the poor dubbing.
As a sex films I thought it was pretty boring and I certainly didn't find any of it erotic. As a thriller the film wasn't all that thrilling and in all honesty I thought it really dragged. The entire film had a very cheap feel to it and in the end it was nothing more than some minor entertainment.

This movie was made back in 1972, its title an obvious play on the French moniker for John Huston's THE MISFITS. It garnered surprisingly good reviews when it was shown on the Cannes movie market that year (Gee, could it be possible that erotic films somehow carried less of a stigma in the early '70s than they do now ?) and, as it predates Just Jaeckin's landmark EMMANUELLE by at least a year, should perhaps be considered a worthier starting point for classy, almost mainstream erotica than that overblown skin flick. Though you wouldn't know it from the spiced-up - read : insert-laden - DVD version currently available in the US, from VCX as MARIANNE BOUQUET (including an additional sequence involving American performers Eileen Welles and John Seeman), it was also not hardcore. That would've been impossible in '72 France where explicit on-screen sex was still some three years away.

Remarkable fly on the wall documentary about the making of "The Last Affair," which was an independent feature made in Chicago, Illinois with a strict stipulation mandated by its financial backers that it had to include explicit hardcore sex scenes in order to capitalize on the porno chic trend which was popular in the mid-1970's. However, the shooting of the movie doesn't go as smoothly as planned, with various unforeseen complications along the way to its completion: The gentle soft-spoken director Henri Charr was earnest in his intentions, but clearly in over his head with the shooting of the sex scenes, lead actress Debbie Dan turned out to be an insufferable neurotic who didn't get along with hunky and cocky male co-star Jerry, one gal finds doing a solo masturbation set piece to be a degrading experience, Dan gets her period at a most inopportune moment, an actor portraying a dirty old man goes much too far with his raunchy improvised dialogue, and boastful braggart Jerry finds himself unable to get an erection during the shooting of a pivotal sex scene with Dan, which necessitated the use of a stand-in at the eleventh hour.

This cheesy slice of Italian B-movie schlock has all the production value and style of a trashy 80s sci-fi series rapidly approaching cancellation (think Buck Rogers in the 25th Century at the end of its second season), with cheap and nasty costumes, crappy set design, terrible special effects, two-dimensional comic-book heroes, dastardly villains and attractive women in sexy but impractical outfits. But where the titillation in a programme like Buck Rogers always ended with just a tantalising glimpse of cleavage or thigh, Beast in Space goes much further, punctuating its silly space fantasy action with bouts of porn, starting off soft-core, but eventually progressing to the harder stuff. The risible plot sees Vassili Karis as starship captain Larry Madison, who leads a mission to the remote planet Lorigon where there reputedly exists a sizable deposit of the rare element Antalium. Once on the planet, Madison and his crew (three of whom are sexy blonde women) explore a castle where they are welcomed by the planet's ruler Onaph (Claudio Undari), who takes a keen interest in the female crew-members, particularly the insatiable Lt. Sondra Richardson (Sirpa Lane).

Previously seen as an Italian language video without subtitles, this seems to be a transfer of a similar print, still without subtitles. Amazing stuff! Purports to be a documentary with a psychiatrist interpreting the bizarre newspaper stories of rape, orgy, bestiality, bit more rape, S&M, more orgy (pretty good actually) and a someone pretending to iron his lady's nightie with her still in it and someone pretending to be a dog- oh and a threesome where the two men get it off. Along the way we get to see more glorious minis, both skirts and dresses than I've ever seen in one film and hardcore sequences. Probably all the better without subtitles, I don't expect the commentary was very profound - enjoy!

For the second installment of my walk down mammary lane, I would like to review as best I can a film I haven't seen in 27 and a half years. Ouch ! Playing on a double bill with Ron Sullivan's magnificent BUDDING OF BRIE at the now long gone if fondly remembered Paris theater in the coastal town of Ostend, Belgium, one sunny Spring day in 1982, was this STARSHIP EROS, an unholy hybrid of low brow science fiction and skin flick which has since faded into obscurity. Even in the age of DVD, with just about anything weird and wonderful eventually resurfacing to face the light of day, this one has yet to materialize. My virtual buddy, the estimable Casey Scott (valiantly slaving away on what should be the definitive account of American porn history), has informed me that battered old 16mm copies have changed hands for a small fortune on eBay. Perhaps the absence of star power, rendering the commercial prospects of restoration and distribution extremely dodgy, is the reason why this particular title remains under lock and key, if surviving at all that is.
