Jess Franco returns to the same ground as Eugenie...The Story of Her Journey Into Perversion and delivers a pretty good remake and certainly one of the best films I've seen from his Golden Era productions (1, 2, 3, 4).
A naive young woman is sexually preyed upon by a man and woman who plan on selling her to a bizarre couple who will sexually torture the girl. The only problem is that the couple, both the man and woman, begin to have feelings for the girl. We've seen Franco tackle the Eugenie theme countless times but it's one element that he always nails on the head. There's really not too much that happens in this film as Franco takes his sweet time with every single scene by extending them to their fullest. For the most part this works but there are a few scenes that become rather boring including a three-minute toe sucking scene. However, Franco always captures sexuality perfectly and that's the case here.
Franco's also known for using the same cast members over and over but this film features all fresh faces, which made the film more interesting to watch for someone who is nearing one-hundred films viewed by the director. The director doesn't pull any punches during the violent ending and manages to make it quite hard to watch even though there's no graphic violence. The film has terrific cinematography and a great score that makes this one of the director's better efforts, although newbies certainly shouldn't start here.

Nathalie catches her husband fooling around on her and goes John Rambo on his and the lover's collective asses, blasting her head off and stabbing him with a pitchfork. She is imprisoned and begins to keep a diary. The sadistic lesbian warden uses the women for her own kicks, and tortures them in goofy ways (thumbscrews, etc). 10 years later she is released back into the world, however, she has become a little unstable. Her prison time has led her to hate all women, and she sets out to sexually torture and murder anyone who dares enter her old home.
Villa Maledetta, 13. Stay away from this address, where a psychotic woman has killed her husband, caught in the act together with a prostitute. Today, the deranged lunatic keeps herself in shape contacting other assorted call girls and giving them a lesson in bondage and fake gore. A pitiable ultra-pathetic Italian commissioner investigates, whilst a coroner cuts plastic bodies in a sort of a garage dispatched for a morgue. Venice is the unaware background for this dreadful, unwatchable video garbage, directed (if "direction" is a word I can use) by Andreas Bethmann, alias the leader of German DVD distribution X Rated. The video (I can't call "film" what's shot with a camcorder), based on a non-existent screenplay, is full of boring, gratuitous hardcore sex, awful SPFX, ludicrous dialogues. Special spice of the dish is the stressing, endless length ! I wasted 2hrs 30mns of my life to watch this dull abomination...sorry, that's the sensation ! In the effort to emulate his "spiritual master", Jess Franco, Andreas has recruited him in the cast together with his lovely wife Lina. It's useless Andreas, you're not the heir of Jess, rather just a copycat ! Avoid it !

There can be no doubting the conviction and integrity of the creative team behind "Needle Boy." The direction is solid, the cinematography beautiful, and the acting committed and daring. Unfortunately, all this artfulness is in the service of a threadbare plot, ninety minutes spent with a despicable main character.
After losing several classmates to a freak boating accident, Nick wanders through a long day in various stages of depression. The film does not make it clear whether the accident is the key to his sullenness and anger; in fact, it implies that he was already a sociopath.
He shows little regard for his devoted girlfriend, openly mocks people, and kicks dogs. He also speaks so few words that we never get to know him, despite his constant presence onscreen.
The movie do go on, with scene after scene of club life, bars, and wandering dark streets, punctuated with sad and explicit sex. We meet only one slightly likeable character, a doe-eyed raver who shares a moment of poetry with Nick despite having no apparent reason for being attracted to him. One sequence stands out, with Nick visiting an overheated club whose dancing patrons are doused in sweat, their hair soggy and makeup streaming. Those who speak to Nick allude to death, implying that for this moment, Nick is among his drowned classmates. This sequence ends with Nick brawling with an acquaintance, seemingly expressing his rage at being a survivor. Unfortunately, the scene has no lasting effect, and it's difficult to see whether Nick is changed by any of his experiences.

Working out of Barcelona (Catalunya), Erika Lust is typical of filmmakers interested in creating erotica while avoiding the clichés of pornography. Her pretentious project "Cabaret Desire" fails on all counts: zero for eroticism, zero for explicitness, zero for casting, zero for story and zero for conduct.
Okay, I was flippant at the end there, but Jean Vigo she ain't - no visual poetry here. Even the premise of the film, a "decadent" cabaret where untalented performers sing or dance but which is built around young poets giving intimate readings to one or two customers at a time (illustrated on screen by pantomime sex vignettes) is a shuck. An informative short film on the DVD titled "The Poetry Brothel" by Patrick Catuz interviews practitioners at Barcelona and NYC "brothels" emulating Storyville or Parisian atmosphere but where folks go off into a corner or secluded nook to listen to one-on-one poetry readings and presumably have sex.
Changing from brothel to cabaret is a major leap that destroys the original concept: the intimacy (beyond sex) of the inn-person poetry readings is quite the opposite of the voyeurism and ABSENCE of human contact/connection of watching pantomime vignettes on one's TV screen.
But what really killed off my nascent interest in this feature was Erika's connection with the cult of amateurism. Along with Max Hardcore's introduction of gonzo into porn, the predilection for watching amateurs rather than pro actors is the most detrimental change in both Adult Entertainment and even mainstream TV (reality-TV) in recent decades. Erika uses untalented performers, as well as those poets whose way with words escapes me (most of the gibberish passed off as poetry here sounds more like the dubbing script for turning a Spanish or Italian movie into a junker for American audiences than original writing). Result: who wants to look at or listen to this set of losers?​

Portraits of Andrea Palmer is an 74minute ride, passing through a life afflicted by depression, pain, and misery. The film puts another perspective upon what we all have become to know as a normal aspect of life, of which we walk past daily without ever thinking twice about. Witness what this "normal life" may entail behind the fake smiles and makeup. This movie is grime. I would dare to say some scenery and images compete with those of Saló, 120 Days of Sodom. The film holds nothing back when reaching towards its goal of ugliness.
What started as watching our protagonist's day to day life quickly fades to a much darker place as she sinks lower and lower. Early scenery captures the concept perfectly with blotchy black and white video effects, breaking only for self inflicted gore images. By the end the world has consumed what bit of individualism she had and you're left with a defeated zombie.
Without ruining much more of the "plot" I will stop there, though I feel the need to warn readers this movie is beyond the point of "questionably extreme". In addition the overall plot lacks a depth which would typically be desirable when watching these sorts of movies.

'Liberté' is an arthouse film that's meant to provoke and perhaps even shock. It's about desire taken to the extreme, beyond the niceties of society and reason. It features a group of people of different social classes and ages, who surrender themselves in the darkness of the forest to pleasure and pain, concepts that become indistinguishable from one another. The story, if one may call it that, starts with naughty insinuations and escalates into an all out sadomasochistic extravaganza. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it doesn't deserve the low rating that it has received so far on IMDb.
Then again, Catalan director Albert Serra never meant to please the audience. He cheekily claims to have been upset by the warm reception of his previous film, the somewhat more accessible 'The Death of Louis XIV'. So he tried to redeem himself this time around by creating something less palatable. He complains that today, most films are made only to gratify the audience and that self-censorship keeps artists from saying anything that may be regarded as too dark, too ambiguous or too offensive for the collective. Fiction is supposed to "break taboos" and show "what's worst about human beings, as a form of catharsis. That's how Greek tragedy was born," he explains in an interview.

You wouldn't expect a Jess Franco Eurocine film called 'Shining Sex' to be a chaste affair - you might well feel cheated if it was. Within moments, Lina Romay, who features prominently in every sense of the word, treats a surprisingly well-to-do audience to a sexual striptease, as the camera swoops in in unforgiving close-ups on every mole, every goose bump. She's also a very cheerful prostitute, and her exhibitionism still turned up to 11, goes off with a mysterious couple for a threesome.
The throes of anguish/ecstasy that fill the next few scenes begin to get tiresome, when the first tendrils of a storyline begin to reach out; at last things become interesting. The couple, Alpha and Andros (Evelyne Scott and Raymond Hardy) are far more mysterious than they initially seem, and Cynthia's (Romay) writhing takes on a different meaning.
It's reassuring to see some familiar faces - the always excellent Monica Swinn as Madame Pécame and Olivier Mathot as Elmos Kallman - although Swinn's character is suitably weird and distant and *far* from reassuring. Franco himself also features as good old Dr. Seward, whose voice is dubbed by someone reaching for his inner Peter Lorre!
Romay is consistently wonderful in this. The transformation from her giggly, extroverted stripper, to seemingly emotionless pawn in the game being played, seems effortless and is highly convincing. Likewise, the shifting from sleazy 70s sex show to something quite different is very powerful - although there is always time for some graphically intimate shots of coupling. It's typically atypical in a Jess Franco film that features gratuitous amounts of female nudity and exploitation, that the female Alpha is fully in charge and Andros is very much her subordinate. An interesting wander into sci-fi territory for Uncle J.

I am a history buff, and have done quite a bit of research on late republic--early empire Rome. The funny thing about the film is that the only part that is really historically accurate (aside from Caligula being emperor) is the starting Narration, when an unseen narrator describes CALIGULA as a "Pervert, glutton, Paranoid, insomniac--this is his story!" After that, fiction takes over, making the movie (and the music) very third rate. Some parts are very disturbing, but gives you a view of the mental capacity of Romans before Christianity took hold of Italy. The acting was second rate. Most of the main players couldn't even speak English, and the 'voice in's' were horribly sequenced. But I must give two thumbs up for David Brandon (Caligula). He played the part so convincingly, with his arrogant, cruel, sadistic actions, that in my opinion, made the movie. <<by the way, does anyone know what David Brandon is up too these days?>> Since it's obvious that the film contains nudity, and many violent scenes, I thought I would focus on the merits (though few and far between). And I must say that the intimate scenes between Laura Gemser (Mariam) and DB are very enticing.
The British Board of Film Classification granted an 18 certificate to 'Caligola: La storia mai raccontata' for theatrical release in 1984 in a version that had been pre-cut by the distributors to remove 14 minutes of hardcore footage and a bestiality scene featuring a horse, and then cut by a further 8m 42 secs by the BBFC. These included all footage of dildos, Caligula raping a virgin in a forest, a wife and child being slaughtered, a man's tongue being removed and closeups of sex scenes. The Board, however, rejected the same cut version for video 3 years later.

Jess Franco takes a stab at the Emmanuelle series, although this ends up having more in common with his de Sade/Eugenie films. There's not much plot but in the film Emmanuelle has just been married and prepares to settle down her sexual ways and stay with one man. However, she gets drunk and gets involved in a lesbian sex show, which freaks her husband out and soon she's back to her old ways. You could argue that outside the WIP genre, Franco has never really created anything of his own and he usually just takes something popular and puts his own spin on it. This originally wasn't suppose to be an Emmanuelle film and that name was just added in the post-dubbing but either way this film is a lot more successful than the recent, real Emmanuelle films I watched from Joe D'Amato. The big difference between Franco's film and those of D'Amato is the fact that Franco really knows how to photograph beautiful women and make them very erotic. There's a fifteen-minute lesbian show here, which certainly works overtime on the erotic nature and star Vicky Adams is a really beautiful woman and Franco captures this perfectly. There's also a very funny sequence at the start of the film when Emmanuelle and her husband walk through a wax museum and get sexually turned on by Humphrey Bogart! However, the film runs out a steam fairly quickly as there's never any sort of plot going on but just various sex scenes throughout the 85+ minute running time. AKA Emmanuelle Exposed.

The late Claude Mulot's savage social satire already contains a kernel of disenchantment with his station in life, that was to grow ever more conspicuous as the years progressed, as he devolved from "cinéma fantastique" (THE BLOOD ROSE) via competently crafted action programmers (PROFESSION : ADVENTURERS) down to sex both simulated (LES CHARNELLES) and all too real. In a cruelly ironic twist, it was this latter capacity that would garner him most notoriety, as fornication filmmaker "Frédéric Lansac" (named after the main character from BLOOD ROSE, played by Philippe Lemaire), a fruitless post-porn attempt at re-integration within the more traditional realms of cinema notwithstanding. His 1975 PUSSY TALK provided the burgeoning French adult industry with a breakthrough film, similar in status to Gerard Damiano's DEEP THROAT across the Atlantic three years earlier, and its reluctant director with his most commercially viable venture to date. While both BLUE ECSTASY and A CHANGE OF PARTNERS, Mulot's additional 1976 triple X offerings, adhered to what was rapidly becoming a blue print for the genre, SHOCKING! shows him kicking and screaming for perhaps the last time until his defiantly bitter skin flick kiss-off PROGRAMMED FOR PLEASURE from 1980.
