The Golden Age of Porn, or porn chic, begins in the early 1970s with American commercial pornography, which received very positive attention from major movie theaters, critics, and the general public. Global hits such as Deep Throat, Behind the Green Door (1972), Devil in Miss Jones (1973), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976) or Café Flesh (1982) marked an era of splendor that ended in the late 80s with the arrival of digital video and the cannibalized production companies that only seek millions of profits to the detriment of cinematographic quality (although here you will also find some very specific gems from the 90s and also some from the 21st century). With this thread I impose my selection (in no specific order) intended for those nostalgic and lovers of cinema in which the label “Adults” meant more than mere explicit sex. Enjoy them!

Richard Mailer's "Classical Romance" is Porno Chic, shot on the film at the end of the theatrical era and all the better for it. It has exactly the same theme as the horribly overrated clunker "La La Land", but was far more entertaining for me.
That's because "La La", touted by sycophantic critics as "for people who love movies" was phony as a 3 dollar bill. I sat through at least a thousand movie musicals, mostly in theaters (revival houses) and appreciated the artistry of the form when directed by the likes of Busby Berkeley, Mark Sandrich, Minnelli and Donen, but that latest pastiche from the "jazz for dummies" creep who made "Whiplash" (in whose universe the giants of jazz are white guys) severely bungled the durable theme pitting selling out vs. sticking true to one's artistic goals.
Yet a lifelong pornographer, Mailer, handled that theme of a pianist sticking to his guns with aplomb, and no hokey John Legend character to tempt him to commercialism. That alone is quite a feat, given that commercialism is God in the Adult Cinema world.
Paul Thomas, soon to become perhaps Adult's finest director of all, is well-cast as the classically trained pianist stuck playing organ music of the Roller Rink style (no Jimmy McGriff or Jimmy Smith he) at an outdoor bar, while studying for a possible audition to get into a top conservatory. He lacks self-confidence, and when the invitation to try out comes his way, he's too chicken to take the opportunity.

1925, Kenmore City. Rudolph (the hopelessly wooden Jeffrey Hurst) catches his wife cheating on him with his best friend. He commits suicide after killing them. Flash forward to 1976. Sexy swinging chick Abby (pretty brunette Ursula Austin) moves into Rudolph's house and is haunted by his pesky and lecherous ghost. When Rudolph isn't doing just what you think with Abby (naturally he doesn't cast a reflection in the mirror, so we get several gut-busting shots of Abby making love to the air!), he's bumping off everyone who gets it on with her (a bath tub electrocution set piece in particular is positively sidesplitting). Boy, does this baby possess all the right wrong stuff to qualify as a truly choice Grade Z clunker: plodding (mis)direction by the legendary Doris Wishman, cruddy post-sync dialogue (not to mention assorted badly dubbed in groaning and moaning), rough'n'grainy cinematography by C. Davis Smith that boasts a fair share of clunky pans and clumsy tracking shots, the inevitable get-down groovy and grinding disco music complete with an incessant thumping beat and wickedly wailin' wah-wah guitar, incredibly stiff (non)acting, a gloriously ludicrous premise, and chintzy (far from) special effects. Naturally, there's plentiful raw and raunchy hardcore copulation that includes fellatio, cunnilingus, lesbian coupling, and some nice group session stuff. Me Decade porn favorites Annie Sprinkle, Vanessa Del Rio, and Robert Kerman all get down and dirty with pleasing lascivious aplomb. A total tacky riot.

The late Sam Weston, brother of popular screen comedian Jack and one of countless Hollywood personalities to shroud his Judaic background - né Samuel Weinstein - will forever be remembered as imitation Italian American adult "auteur" Anthony Spinelli. Something of a transitional title in his expansive body of work, this ranks among his all time best, marking the end of his economic era (the "Wes Brown" period, though littered with additional aliases) with small cast chamber pieces such as THE SEDUCTION OF LYN CARTER and heralding the arrival of his most fruitful filmmaking stretch with blockbusters SEXWORLD and TALK DIRTY TO ME. Containing characteristics of both artistic extremes, EASY hearkens back to earlier examinations of female sexuality including the unjustly overlooked Mimi Morgan showcase THE FIRST TIME but disrupts their Spartan set-up by widening his scope to encompass outside influences that shed light on the anti-heroine's plight and motives. Not a first for the director who had already painted a complex canvas of cause and consequence in 1976's CRY FOR CINDY but EASY was to implement the habit.
The film also marks the beginning of not one but two beautiful as well as mutually beneficial friendships. Starlet Jesie St. James had but a few minor carnal credits to her name when she caught Weston's eye and he was to mold her Svengali-style into his movie-making muse. Though still in her twenties, she projected a maturity well beyond her years which found her frequently cast as a disenchanted thirty-something, kind of a capsule description of Easy's Kate Harrison.

A small group of ex-jocks and cheerleaders sit at a bar reminiscing about high school, specifically going to a hotel stay while on an away game. The film is pretty good up to a point. That point being when the flashbacks are done and it moves to present day. Those scenes just are not nearly as hot as what came before. Fortunately the flashbacks take up a slight majority of the film's running time so that didn't bother me much. The girls are very good looking and it was eons better then the previous Anthony Spinelli directed film that I had seen, Cry for Cindy.

Blonde,busty Jennifer Welles is one of the all time great porn superstars and not just because of her obvious physical qualities. Rumour has it that the four Oriental guys she finishes her climactic orgy scene with were not professional porno people but just happened to be catering on the set!

A depraved cult who worship the god Uranus engage in all kinds of debauched carnal activities. Sure, this film suffers from hit or miss acting and a sidesplitting surplus of goofy chanting ("Enter my dark passage"), but man does this barely hour long hardcore grinder deliver on the freaky deaky kinky sex: One gal has a lit candle sticking out of her can, two lascivious ladies discover the joys of their vaginas, we've got oodles of oily naked babes, and, best of all, several women take it in their poopers like troopers. Moreover, the floating cinematography is pretty impressive considering the slight budget, there's lots of great time capsule footage of seedy 70's streets, foxy blonde Vivian Parks adds plenty of sizzle as eager newbie Sarah, and the funky-throbbing score hits the get-down groovy spot. Fans of down'n'dirty vintage 70's sin cinema should really dig this one.

Dress shop owner Uschi Karnat sets up her customers and other women she meets so that they get into situations where her lover can rape and bugger them in isolated places, he being deprived of anal sex with Uschi. Joe D'amato's forray into X-rated features during the 90s is well know to adult film fans as well as those who recall the film-maker's numerous ventures into various different motion picture territories. To the fans of the horror and exploitation genre, D'amato's XXX selection may seem more like a side track, or a distraction/diversion more than the continued exploration of... ahem... well, who knows why for certain, but for those who were introduced to D'amato's "art" via his more hardcore explicit filmography, "Tarzan", or "Jungle Heat" as it was called upon it's original release in Canada on VHS, is also a very divisive work, as is most of his repertoire.
For some, his style of mixing medium shots and slow motion, fading into different positions without showcasing the actual change, and the rather very formulaic format of his scènes (you can almost time your watch to them) is a definite "turn off". His style, if you will, seems more akin to the "couples-friendly" demographic rather than the strictly "raincoater" crowd, although some of the action depicted in his explicit scènes may proove to be too "typical p0rn" rather than being accessible to those who are simply curious.

I've often wondered what would have resulted if Ken Russell had taken one of the offers back in the day (when porn was chic) and actually made a hardcore porn film. The answer my friends is blowing in Zebedy Colt's VIRGIN DREAMS, an abstract erotic exercise made for Jean Jennings fans but bearing the influence of Ken's works.
Plot is minimal and basic: young Jean is hardly a chip off the old block as her unlikely parents Zebedy Colt and Gloria Leonard (she must have been adopted) lament the prudishness of their offspring. They want her to marry boyfriend Wade Nichols, but Jean is puritanical enough to be played by Mary Pickford circa 1914.
Film consists largely of Jean's dreams, escalating in their eroticism and explicitness. Colt has clearly been watching Ken's 1970s movies, as the dreams are accompanied by romantic classical scores, eventually segueing into hard rock (in the vein of Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA track, but predating that film), just as Ken was segueing into the music of The Who and Rick Wakeman in the mid-'70s. Even Colt's imagery evokes the master, though executed on a threadbare budget.

This movie set the stage for "Porno Chic" a time when it seemed okay to go out and see a "dirty movie" at the local theatre. Couples were going, along with groups of women, curious as to what the clamour was all about. The clamour was actually about this technique that Linda Lovelace was displaying in this movie. That is the true star of the movie. We can easily forget that this was a time when adult features were trying to have a storyline to gain acceptance with a mainstream audience so a story is included. The acting in this movie is okay as porn acting goes, luckily the one with the talented throat also could manage a few acting skills. Dolly Sharp as Linda's girlfriend Helen is funny and has an unusual look for those of us used to modern-day Bimbo porno queens. What ever happened to Dolly Sharp? Harry Reems is doing his best Groucho Marx imitation as the doctor who helps Linda with her "problem". The young looking blonde who is Reems' nurse just seems to be allowing her body to be used as she appears to be a million miles away emotionally and mentally. Great music. Rare to find a porn movie what has lyrics along with the action. Singing a song called "Bubbles" and making bubbling noises during an oral sex scene comes across pretty funny , but the song that is REALLY funny is the title song "Deep Throat" with such memorable lyrics as "Deep Throat, that's all she wrote, Deep Throat", we have had a lot of fun making up our own lyrics to this song. Highly recommended adult movie. Funny as hell, sexy and it will get you turned on. What more can one ask for in an adult film?

Filmed together, the 2 parts of this romance by Candida Royalle has a story letdown in this volume, but keeps up the high standard of eroticism. Dominated by the mysterious Mickey G., Missy carries on as his submissive, and a new cast of strong performers keep the XXX scenes interesting. As usual, director Candida keeps the porn "woman-friendly" by stressing softcore camera angles and omitting cum shots.
