Jamie Gillis and Bree Anthony receive quality roles (for a change) in the above-average porn soap opera WHEN A WOMAN CALLS. Director Bill Milling/Philip Drexler (among many stage names) gives a preview of the talent exemplified in his later classics, notably A SCENT OF HEATHER. Picture has an unusual bi-coastal setting, with action split between New York City and Los Angeles, though the talent roster is East Coast (and shooting was likely NYC only). Gillis and Anthony are presented as a married couple squabbling, preparing to get divorced. Bree handles whoever narration, noting that their 3-year relationship is over, and a classical music score adds to the porno Lifetime Channel aspect of the story. A flashback shows them humping in better times, but right now Jamie's brother Scotty (Alan Marlow) is helping him move to L.A. Once there Jamie takes up with Helen Madigan while Alan is serviced by Liz (an unidentified actress).

A Jack of all trades within adult industry confines, performing anything from script supervision to sound editing, Joe Sherman graduated to directing with a mere handful of puerile but undeniably pleasant porn comedies akin to the late great Gerard Damiano's attempts at same. Making no claims beyond providing light lustful entertainment, Sherman had the impeccable sense of surrounding himself with talented people who were proficient at both aspects thereof, first and foremost the delectable Danielle who was to headline in most of his efforts, memorably essaying the title role in his enjoyably ludicrous THE BLONDE NEXT DOOR. In what must surely rank as Sherman's sterling directorial achievement, EXPOSE ME NOW, she plays Sondra, ever supportive Girl Friday to conniving Abel Phillips (Ron Jeremy) who feels he has been cruelly cheated out on his dad's inheritance by his do-gooder twin brother Shane (Herschel Savage).

The six-chaptered vignette structure with little in the way of a connecting theme, other than the way characters from various walks of life relate to each other sexually, must have seemed like a retrograde step at the time for the director immediately following his most daring and experimental work (1977’s ODYSSEY, THE ULTIMATE TRIP). The passing of time has been kind to this particular picture however. As a matter of fact, it would make the perfect place to start for anyone intent on exploring his richly varied and often surprisingly personal body of work as it could practically serve as a calling card for then future employment, exploring different styles in both sex and storytelling. Half a dozen self-contained short subjects, some of which predominantly focus on sex as performance for an audience of one (or more), while others have the feel of acting school exercises. All but two scenes are exclusively oral, female to male, the director's proclaimed personal favorite among sex acts, lovingly slow and sensuous, just the way he liked 'em, with the notable exception of Jamie Gillis jackhammering Serena's tonsils in the first installment.

As the world slides to nuclear war and bombs explode in the background, the de Courvals have their family problems, but become increasingly uninhibited. Juliette is uninterested in her husband.
