Jess Franco's erotic twist on the vampire legend has Lina Romay playing Countess Irina, the last member of a vampire family who plans on ending the legacy. A troubled journalist (Anna Watican) shows up to interview Irina and soon the vampire is putting a spell on her. This film is available in three different versions. A hardcore one, which I've watched before, a horror version and a softcore version, which is being reviewed here. The difference in this take on the vampire legend is that Romay doesn't suck the blood out of the neck but instead sucks the semen out of you know where. When you talk to Franco fans about this film you'll usually start a heated debate but to me this is one of the directors best films. The opening, with Romay, naked of course, walking through a fog filled forest, really sets the tone for the film, which also includes a terrific and haunting score by Daniel White. Romay plays a mute in the film and I think this is one of her best performances because she's able to display a sadness that really works for the film. It doesn't hurt matters that she walks around completely naked throughout the movie and this beauty is certainly her in prime shape. This softcore version is certainly more erotic than horror but this is just fine as I find the movie to be incredibly sexy. There's a nearly ten minute lesbian scene between Romay and the reporter, which is extremely hot. Franco himself as well as Jack Taylor, Alice Arno and Monica Swinn has supporting roles and all add fine work (although it's hard to tell with some of the English dubbing). This version runs a tad bit too long at 101-minutes but if you get caught up in the dream like nature of the film then you really are seeing one of the more unique sexploitation films out there. I've seen the XXX version, which is just downright ugly and kills the beauty of the original film but I'm still trying to seek out the horror version and will hopefully come upon it sometime soon.

This movie, while marketed under the relatively innocuous English title "Loves of the Nympho", may be the most insane of the many insane offerings of Italian director Sergio Bergonzelli, who was already making the kind irredeemable sleaze in the early 70's that his fellow countrymen like Joe D'Amato, Andreas Bianchi, and Bruno Mattei would be churning out by the end of the decade. This seems to be a kind of sequel to Bergonzelli's earlier "Cristiana, Student of Scandal" (at least, if the title character hadn't died at the end of that)with Toti Achilli taking over the role Malissa Longo originally played as a college-age, ridiculously promiscuous, micro mini-skirted minx.
When the film opens "Cristiana" is having sex on airplane, but not in the bathroom like a normal person--no, she's doing it right in coach(!) while her hedonistic friends cheer her on and the other passengers, including a couple nuns, look on embarrassed. But then the plane almost goes down in a rainstorm (in some hilarious model-airplane-in-a-bathroom-shower footage), and she repents her sinful ways to one of the nuns and promises to join a convent. When they end up surviving, she follows through on her promise, even though her society mother (Eva Czemerys) and her friends are dead-set against it. But, of course, if you've ever seen an Italian "nunsploitation" movie, you know there's no better place for a crazed nympho to be! Once in the convent she immediately has a lesbian affair with an older nun (Magda Konopfka). A male painter corners her in a bell tower and really rings HER bell. She then sneaks her boyfriend into the nunnery. I won't reveal the rest, but since this is a Sergio Bergonzelli film, you know it's going to swing wildly from screwball comedy to tragedy and back again.

The old joke about leaving a movie and humming the scenery applies to this misguided effort to tap hardcore porn talent to make a bigger-budget soft-core movie. It might have had some value had the French filmmakers taken the more obvious approach of shooting scenes both ways (as is still done for exploiting XXX videos re-edited for Pay-Cable use).
The conceit of showing us behind the scenes action of a shoot, apparently taking place in Budapest or perhaps Prague, for a Cleopatra movie in Soft X style is merely dull and adds little to the relatively sumptuous sets and cast of dozens of nude extras. For a successful project albeit strictly XXX, just compare with Antonio Adamo's decade-later "Roma" trilogy, which dispensed with the film-within-a-film gambit.
So we get Zara Whites in a nearly mainstream project, but without the permission to do what comes naturally, namely to consummate her many sex scenes. The cutting away after the tease becomes tiresome in a hurry, and the many, many femme extras fully exposed (usually with full bushes rather than subsequent shaved-vaginas) should have been porn actresses instead to permit a dual version approach.

The Holy Grail for many hardcore aficionados, the late Sam Weston's AN ACT OF CONFESSION (on-screen title) ultimately proves more interesting for sheer obscurity and what it a tad clumsily attempts rather than fully achieves. One can only wonder and marvel at what possessed the director – still in his fledgling "Sybil Kidd" phase – to make such extremely explicit account of a young 15th Century nun's struggle to remain true to her vocation while vivid visions of depravity perpetually cloud her mind.
Bear in mind that much of the adult industry at the time was controlled by the mob, many of their members still strongly adhering to their Roman Catholic upbringing. Historical account, though sketchy, specifically points to this fact as reason the movie was never theatrically released in New York and received only scant play dates on the West Coast. Availability thus far has been limited to a poor quality and presumably incomplete VHS release by Alpha Blue Archives in 1996, quickly withdrawn from sales, under pressure perhaps ?

The first of the Italian rip-offs of the French soft porn blockbuster (though it might be interesting to note that the boot-shaped country actually got their first with Cesare Canevari's 1968 IO, EMMANUELLE starring Erika Blanc) is a very different kettle of fish than the sleazy sequels provided by the late, questionably great Joe D'Amato. It is much closer in spirit to the now very dated Just Jaeckin film from 1973, taking a pokerfaced look at male/female relationships, questioning such then hot topics as fidelity and jealousy, all in luxurious exotic surroundings. Unlike D'Amato, director Albert Thomas (aka Adalberto Albertini, who also made the hard to find YELLOW EMANUELLE, actually a sexed-up version of MADAME BUTTERFLY !) does not present us with predatory drug lords, snuff movie makers or rampaging cannibals, making for an admittedly less sensational yet far more erotic viewing experience.
Photo journalist Mae Jordan aka 'Emanuelle' (lovely Java-born Laura Gemser in her first lead role following bit parts as a Thai masseuse in EMMANUELLE 2 and an 'unspoilt native' in Just Jaeckin's portion of the rarely seen COLLECTIONS PRIVEES) flies down to Nairobi where she's to shoot the stills accompanying an article by noted British writer Anne, played by the very Teutonic Karin Schubert with a butch haircut that takes some getting used to. Anne shares an 'open relationship' (remember when this was made) with her Italian husband Gianni (Angelo Infanti), meaning that both pretty much jump anything with a pulse. Contrary to her subsequent reputation, Emanuelle appears positively reticent compared to her heavy breathing hosts, smoldering seductively at Gianni by way of foreplay until the exquisitely tantalizing pay-off.

This movie is an amazing movie, depicting intense varied emotions. It encapsulates liberation and freedom along with spirituality which is so much the essence of humanity. I found the sex to be so much a natural part, yet which is so often regarded as 'unnatural'to show in our society. The movie really teaches one to get in touch with his own spirituality instead of the dogma we have created for ourselves. A really powerful and enchanting movie, added by the superb acting by Shari Solanis - an actor with unparell emotional appeal. All in all, a must watch movie with kudos to the director and producer and the rest of the cast as well. Definitely 10 points - more if possible.

My review was written in May 1991 after a Cannes Film Festival Market screenng. Tinto Brass' "Paprika" is a failed attempt at Italian sex comedy. The maestro's patented CALIGOLA brand of gross-out is here in abundance, but where are the laughs? Fim introduces yet another zaftig Italian actress, Debra Caprioglio. As he did five years ago with Serena Grandi in the erotic hit "Miranda", Brass the talent scout has given Capriolglio an awesome undraped showcase that should win her repeat appearances in similar roles. Caprioglio plays Mimma, an 18-year-old beauty from Pola who goes to work for 15 days in a brothel to earn money for her boyfriend. He turns out to be two-timing her, so she stays on in Madame Colette's establishment with a new name, Paprika.
Episodic feature set in the 1950s, way too long at nearly two hours, presents in amoral fashon the cheerful lass' misadventures as she's initiated into a world of libertines, much like the heroine of a Victorian porn novel. She takes up with a violent pimp, moves to brothels in Rome and Milan, and occasionally gets gigs at private parties.
Vulgar and sexist, "Paprika" hits its low pint when hammy guest star John Steiner (as an aristocrat) invites the heroine and another prostitute to his mansion for some water sports. Brass had a similar scene in "Miranda", but here he outdoes that one for tastelessness.
