I applied to perform a solo show at two different fringe festivals. The show would be based on my nude art modeling. I’ve been modeling for art classes since 1984. The show would simulate the beginning of a figure drawing class, with me in a robe. I talk to the imaginary instructor, drop the robe, and do a series of short gesture poses. I then go into a 20 minute standing pose, and I talk about what I’m thinking, telling stories about past modeling experiences, etc. I’m still writing the script to know what I’m going to say and to get the timing down.
I just heard back from one of the festivals, and I was not selected. I am in a reserve tank in case one of the acts they did pick has to drop out. I’m rather crushed. I really wanted to do that naked monologue on a stage in a legitimate theater.
Applications for the other festival close on June 1st, and I assume I’ll find out about that one a week later. I paid application fees of 25 and 40 dollars for the two festivals. That’s quite a bit of money to pay to someone who has the option to give you nothing but a form rejection letter in return.
