Apparently the director said in an interview that the stairwell scene (which depicted sex with dubious consent) was supposed to be unsimulated anal sex. Caroline had agreed to shoot it except the actor couldn't get an erection on the day of the shoot. Can you imagine if they had pulled that off? I'm not aware of any "mainstream" film has ever included unsimulated anal.

I really like this sentence "Or at least so we are told..."!
I am not a VFX expert but I worked in this field for years (as a support engineer) and to be honest I don't believe that this movie with this limited budget (4.7 mil) can produce such level of realistic, never before tried VFX!
even if the entire cast worked for free the budget is not enough!
I've heard about some sort of making-of material that exposes how the sex scene where actually filmed but personally I've never seen such material and until I do I will continue to be "reluctant" to believe the CGI story!

I heard that the actress didn't assume and that's understandable, apparently she was in a relationship at the time of filming. I heard they didn't explicitly show the penetration so as not to embarrass the actress's boyfriend.

In my opinion, penetration has taken place. On the celebroulette website, the scene is available and at 2 minutes 27 you can see the actress' face change. In my opinion, penetration has taken place.
