A completely incompetent yet highly interesting softcore film by José Bénazéraf, which tries to win over the viewer in less than an hour. A woman is bored stiff in her marriage to an impotent man who only seems to get aroused by watching others have sex. One day, he picks up two young hitchhikers (auto-stoppeuses, as they so eloquently say in French). The couple is also visited by several good friends, who don't hesitate to strip naked immediately upon arrival. All sorts of erotic combinations arise, but the lady of the house continues to stare listlessly into space, a dead look in her eyes. Her husband then decides to electrify the bathwater to kill her. However, she sees through the trap and waits for her husband with a double-barreled shotgun...

Randy is up late last night reading the Necronomican (as you do) and tragedy strikes when she accidentally calls up the devil...and he possesses her vagina. This then leads to plenty of comical situations as the possessed vagina develops a voice of its own and begins talking to any prospective male sexual partners. This film is rather silly as you would expect; but I actually really enjoyed it. This is the first film I've seen about a talking vagina, and the idea is rather amusing. The plot is virtually nonexistent and the film doesn't do anything that you wouldn't expect it to; in fact, it mostly just jumps from one sex scene to another. The sex itself is not particularly hardcore; despite the film having a real 'roughie' feel.

Lost until quite recently, this middling softcore crime/hostage drama from Stu Segal is fairly interchangeable with any number of '70s X-rated hostage flicks (think THE BIG SNATCH, TANYA, and any of the myriad hardcore variations on the same formula). It's nice to have it back, but we probably could have pieced it together out of those other films just as easily. The bare-bones plot concerns a guy and group of women who hide out in a woodland cabin after a jewelry heist, bringing a couple people from the company they robbed in tow. Very little happens after that point - the guy calls whoever he's working for, a kind of Manson-lite figure who declines to show up since they have too much heat on them and disappears for the rest of the film, while the guy (who's boffing his sister, in a weird subplot) slowly goes insane with sexual jealousy. Naturally, the film wraps up with the male hostage and one of the women (the sister, for the record) trying to make a break for it.

The storyline of this semi-porno has surprisingly many similarities to "The Last Seduction". The tone of the film is very different though, and the leading female character is much less in control here. Unsurprisingly Jean-Marie Pallardy wrote himself yet another good-guy role where he gets to hump the female lead. Some of the sex scenes with Karin Schubert go pretty far, so that one may wonder whether this was perhaps made in two versions. Still, it is generally believed that she turned to hardcore porn only about 5 years later. Fans of Brigitte Lahaie will be disappointed to hear that she is only given very little screen time in a minor role.

Curiously, this is the 4th most successful ever Dutch film, released at a time that onscreen nudity and sex (with proper actors) was something new and quite daring, the sign of the modern liberated times, and drew an enthusiastic audience. It gave the Bijlmer neigborghood also a reputation for supposely being full of bored and frustrated housewives. Such a genre of films did not last long into the 70s, since those that wanted to watch sex on screen could watch dedicated sex films without the boring talky bits, and the proper actors realised they were making straight exploitation films rather than cinema. And "Blue Movie" is absolutely a time capsule, the new Bijlmer flats, the clothes and interiors, and the attitudes towards the new era of sexual liberation.

There are two ways to approach this movie. If you're looking for a softcore porn knock-off you will no doubt find it very strange, but you probably won't be disappointed. If you're a Jean Rollin fan though you won't find it strange enough, and you probably will be. The problem with this movie is that it is VERY heavily padded with the typical boring, mechanical softcore grinding scenes. It's not that this detracts from the plot--this is a Rollin film after all with the usual deliciously bizarre if completely inconsequential story--but it does take away from the strangely beautiful images and haunting atmosphere that characterize the director's best work. Rollin seemed to realize this and used a pseudonym on the film, even before it was retitled "Fly Me the French Way" (what the hell does that mean, anyway?) and had some pre-credit sequence from what is obviously a completely different movie slapped onto it.
