If memory serves, I read somewhere that Michele Perello was a famous softcore-only actress that did hardcore for the first time in this film. Later she did two more hardcore films for a different director. Considering this was way before the days of the internet, many people never knew about the porn aspect of her career while her non-porn films where relatively successful.

I think this case is similar to the one of "The Great Ephemeral Skin": when it came out everyone was excited to see a mainstream\arthouse film with explicit sex done by a then unknown non-porn actress. Later she (Lana Sue, if that is her real name) turned out to do a lot more porn for Lust Cinema and others. When looked at in retrospect, say by someone on a forum 40 years from now, "Ephemeral" might simply look like another artsy porn film featuring a young porn star on her first debut.
