Liberté (Freedom) (2019) by Albert Serra

Another film from this years Cannes.

Reviews talk about "a lot of explicit sex" or an "two-hour orgy of sadomasochistic debauchery".

I couldn't find anything more than a trailer based on the stage play with the same name from 2018 which doesn't show any resemblance to what the reviews of the actual film describe.

Well I hope it will be something exciting for us. It doesn't seem to have caused as much of a stir as Mektoub did.

Has anyone seen the movie? On imdb it is written that the film has already been released in France, Germany and will be released in Spain on November 15, 2019 and in Poland on may 15, 2020. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10199670/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_dt_dt

Judging by reviews the film look like on porn!

"The film is intentionally minimally lit. It's in the woods, there are trees and leaves everywhere to obscure the views. And it's criminally dark. If grandiose and ornate production design and suggestive nature were the point of his stage version of Liberté, It’s the darkness and restraint from showing too much is the point in his film version. Yet the film is still filled with graphic sexual imagery. "

"Serra is making the most out of cinematic medium here that he couldn't dare do on stage - graphic sex scenes obscured and not full on porno level but are still very shocking nonetheless: close ups of vaginas, pissing, flogging, bondage, etc. And in turn, he makes voyeurs out of all of us. And it goes on and on and on. " https://screenanarchy.com/2019/09/n...xual-indulgence-in-albert-serras-liberte.html

"After some brief insinuations of a plot, Liberté lives up to its title and dispenses with structure as we spend the better part of two hours and 12 minutes watching a dozen-odd bewigged men and women cruise, hump, whip and piss on each other. What's shocking about Liberté is that its documentary-like images are actually more banal given that breaking taboos, extreme porn imagery and trolling have been par for the course for a while now. " https://nowtoronto.com/movies/tiff2019/tiff-review-liberte-albert-serra/

"Once the libertine shenanigans begin, even more of the story goes out the window. Instead, it’s just one scene of sexual exploits after the next. Sometimes it’s men masturbating around a bound woman. Sometimes it’s analingus being performed or urination depicted. This doesn’t even take into account groping or actual sex. Mostly, it’s deviant behavior, which is all depicted for no reason. Some of it appears simulated, while other sequences are actually being performed. Either way, it’s painful to watch unfold. "As Liberté progresses, Serra’s characters evolve only so far as to graduate from ass-slappings, light kissing, and spectated masturbation to fellatio, rimming, and straightforward penetration, " https://www.slantmagazine.com/film/...evels-in-an-amorphous-night-of-transgression/

Thanks for the report, guess I'll wait for the scenes to pop-up online instead of renting it.
