For the second installment of my walk down mammary lane, I would like to review as best I can a film I haven't seen in 27 and a half years. Ouch ! Playing on a double bill with Ron Sullivan's magnificent BUDDING OF BRIE at the now long gone if fondly remembered Paris theater in the coastal town of Ostend, Belgium, one sunny Spring day in 1982, was this STARSHIP EROS, an unholy hybrid of low brow science fiction and skin flick which has since faded into obscurity. Even in the age of DVD, with just about anything weird and wonderful eventually resurfacing to face the light of day, this one has yet to materialize. My virtual buddy, the estimable Casey Scott (valiantly slaving away on what should be the definitive account of American porn history), has informed me that battered old 16mm copies have changed hands for a small fortune on eBay. Perhaps the absence of star power, rendering the commercial prospects of restoration and distribution extremely dodgy, is the reason why this particular title remains under lock and key, if surviving at all that is.
Memory being a bit shaky, yet pressed into duty since no one else seems to have bothered to review this movie at present, I will attempt to describe to the best of my waning abilities the fairly mind-blowing experience of seeing this projected onto the big screen back when I first managed to bluff my way into an adults only cinema at the tender age of 14 ! Specifics might be a bit hazy but I assume any info on a flick this rare would be welcome. The stuff I do recall from my humble beginnings, I will try and filter through the knowledge I have acquired through research since.

Now I was not aware of the previous movies the director (and star) of this movie had done. He apparantly was quite the rebel and had quite the interesting ideas back in the day. In this or rather with this, he seems to fulfill a personal ... dream I reckon you could call it. Answering if he can still get it up and do it - and that means exactly what you think it means.
Now the version he released is void of explicit sex - at least that's what it looks like, I have not gone frame by frame to check if there is some frames that actually reveal something. Although revealing it still is - lots and lots of nudity. I can only guess that he keeps an uncut version or directors cut version for his own pleasure - literally. Now the way this is shot is quite artistic if you think of it and how much effort they went through, so you can't see anything - although towards the end there is some blurring, so even that they gave up on.
Also the pseudo intellectual talk during the movie about women and men, worldviews on erotica and more are not shocking or revealing. They are just ramblings of an old man - now don't get me twisted, I'm not hating. Good for him for ... pleasuring so many women (really a lot, not exaggerating!), but as a movie for others this does not really work. It can be enticing and arousing for some, because even though the framing doesn't allow us a clear view, we still know what's going on - and we can hear them having (fake?) fun.
It might have been a good idea overall, but Chasing the muse is neither philosophical nor as erotic as it thinks it is. Although if anything it is the latter rather than the former ... reducing the "Muse" to nothing more than a sex object. Which I gues overall might feel "right" on how general women are viewed, but it would make a more interesting point if you'd have some intelligent dialog and conversations coming from women too - no pun intended.

One of the most obscure Franco's i've had the privilege to see. Or rather see the first hour of because after that the frame just freezes on my (very murky) copy, leaving the confused viewer to wonder what the hell happened. OK, I admit it, I didn't understand a thing but it seems to be some kind of perverse, kinky, black comedy/ironic family-drama/soft porno? Only in the mind of Jess Franco... A family is living together on an isolated island and the family idyll is sometimes disrupted by PC stuff like the daughter masturbating in front of her father (i'd say a good third of the film consists of Lina jacking off), the mother forcing her children to take part in S/M games or Lina giving her retarded sister a handjob. "We're a happy family, we're a happy family hey mum and daddy", as the Ramones song goes. There's a lot of lot of seemingly misplaced, mindless chattering (which I didn't understand of course) during all the weird and sick stuff going-ons, so I would guess the film is wittier and more intelligent than first seems (much like The Inconfessionable Orgies of Emmanuelle I guess, in which the dry, sarcastic tone got lost completely in the language barrier until the subtitled DVD release revealed a much better film than thought at first). But all in all it's safe to say that this no budget wonder is for francophiliacs only. I don't know whether I should consult a film buff or a psychiatrist, but why the hell did this film somehow remind me of a perverted Douglas Sirk?

It's clear that a lot of people can't get past the explicitness of this film, which is a shame. I recall a lot of embarrassed giggling last time I saw it at the cinema. The art/pornography debate seems futile to me - this is a film about an obsessive sexual relationship/love affair and it tells it like it is. But it's about as far away from the likes of "Debbie Does Dallas" as you can get. The film is clearly serious in intent and there is a lot of beauty in it. The subtle political content/context of the film is often overlooked - some of the few scenes shot outside the bedroom show groups of soldiers marching the other way from the direction our characters travel - and we all know where the rising Japanese militarism and nationalism of the 1930's led.
I think the best comparison is probably with a film like "Last Tango in Paris" which dealt with similar themes in a similar way - and was probably also pretty boring for those with a short attention span.

This isn't necessarily a high compliment, but this might be the best of the many Italian rip-offs of "The Exorcist". It's definitely better than bigger budgeted nonsense like "Beyond the Door" and "The Temptor". It may be kind of a toss-up between this film where Mariangela Giordana plays a middle-age nun engaging in hot inter-generational lesbian sex with her demon-possessed teenage charge and "The Sexorcist" where Ivan Rassimov plays a demon/Christ statue come to life who pulls himself off a crucifix and nails, in quite a different sense, a sexy female artist. I guess what it comes to though is that I'd rather see Giordano naked than Rassimov (that or I'm just a sucker for nun-related, inter-generation lesbian scenes). This movie does much more faithfully follow the plot of the "The Exorcist". The possessed girl, Bimba, lives in an old castle with sundry relatives and a nun guardian. She is somewhat older than Ravin in "The Exorcist"--the character is supposedly sixteen but the actress (the never-to-be-seen-again Katell Laennac)looks to be a few years older than that. This is no doubt a good thing as she spends the movie graphically masturbating with stuffed animals, spying on her sleazy aunt having sex with her uncle and her widowed father, dispatching an unfortunate (or lucky?)elderly relative with a fatal bout of oral favors, or having the aforementioned lesbian sex with Giordano.

Now here's something you don't see very often--a hardcore Swedish adaptation of the Marquis de Sade directed by a man who later became a highly respected Hollywood cinematographer lensing productions like TV's "The Wonder Years". Unfortunately, it's not very good (although, god knows, it's better than "The Wonder Years"). It takes the Marquis DeSade's story of two sisters, a virtuous one who suffers and a sinful one who prospers in world that above all things is cruel, and turns it into a stupid modern (as of 1975 anyway)sex comedy.
The two leads, Joe Sarno-regular Maria Forse who plays Justine and the unknown who plays Juliette get naked a lot, but don't really participate in the hardcore sex scenes. That is left to the anonymous extras and American porn star Harry Reems (hilariously dubbed into Swedish) who once again shows off his monstrous manhood and even more monstrous moustache as he plays an American millionaire (even though as I said he is dubbed into Swedish)who has promised his fortune to whatever woman can give him a heart attack during sex.
Like the vast majority of Eurotica that crosses into hardcore this film has WAY too many long sex scenes and will bore the holy hell out of anyone NOT watching it for ceiling-painting purposes. Maria Forse is very cute, but not a particularly talented actress and the other performer's talents descend precipitously from there. Worst of all, it is very obviously NOT in the spirit of the Marquis de Sade (torturing only the viewers). I'd recommend instead other flawed adaptations of the same tale like Jess Franco's "Marquis de Sade's Justine" or "Cruel Passions" with the ever delectable Koo Stark. This is one to avoid.

When Guardami was shown at the Venice Film Festival it was sabled down by most critics because of the explicit scenes. But this is a very good, even sweet movie based upon the life of Moana Pozzi, the Italian pornstar who died of cancer. The part is portrayed in an astonishing, daring way by Italian mainstream actress Elisabetta Cavallotti, who never acted in sexy movies before Guardami. She even started out as a Shakespeare actress in many stage plays. The way she portrays Nina shows a lot of courage. The movie shows the relationship between the pornstar and a regular guy, who is also a cancer patient. It's such a pity the critics aim only at the few sex scenes, because this is a quality movie. The best mainstream movie about the porn industry is of course Boogie Nights, but this one might come in second place...

Cited as her first solo movie, made without the collaboration of hubby Michael (who merely helps out in the narration as the voice of a shrink), THE ALTAR OF LUST is also interesting as a transitional film memorializing the switchover from softcore to hardcore in adult cinema.
Findlay was to make more softcore films in the future, notably her wonderful romantic melodrama THE CLAMDIGGER'S DAUGHTER and later a series of clumsy & ineffective horror movies, but by 1971 hardcore had already taken over the exhibition side of the business. Its victory was complete the following year with the release of DEEP THROAT.
A young girl Viveca, who flashbacks reveal was raped by her step dad, moves to New York with her boyfriend, a pre-mustache Harry Reems. He has another girl friend, Marie (a pretty Kelly Lynch-type) and eventually we are treated to a menage a trois by the principals.
With a party scene involving a sexy belly dancer as filler, film portrays fairly convincing dramatics, culminating in the heroine's shrink resorting to unorthodox therapy -balling his patient on the psychiatrist couch! In-joke has Michael Findlay as voice of the shrink making reflexive statements like "I make no moral judgments" in voice-over, and frequently pressing Viveca to reveal her possible incestuous thoughts.
Viveca is well played by an unknown actress, assigned the colorful pseudonym here of "Erotica Lantern". Maybe she'll show up in the new GREEN LANTERN movie, in 3-D! Supporting femmes Susie Mann, Arlena Blue and Laura Cannon all make an impressive visual impression.

Dietrich, best known for producing several Jess Franco films, takes the director's chair and delivers an average sexploitation film, which stars Lina Romay. In the film, Romay plays a sex addict who has become a famous movie star. To get her sexual needs, she has her chauffeur (Eric Falk) drive her around in the Rolls-Royce to pick up various men and women for sex. This film is pretty much softcore except for a small oral scene and this mix really gives the film a what the hell feel because I'm not quite sure what Dietrich was going for. The film is never really erotic because the sex scenes are more graphic than anything else but at the same time they never go hardcore so all of the scenes are in a rather strange mix in terms of what's going on. When I first watched this film I was shocked to see Romay doing the oral sex scenes but since then I've seen over a hundred Franco movies and know that Romay has gone onto do countless hardcore movies. She's pretty good in the film and one could argue that she's never looked better. The film opens up with her shaving her private areas with a straight razor so she certainly isn't shy. In the end the film comes off rather flat but fans of Romay will certainly want to take the ride (no pun of course).

In the heart of many a pornographer is a serious filmmaker, feeling stifled by his (or her) medium. Such is the case with FRANKIE AND JOHNNIE, wherein director Alan Colberg freaks out in the "search for meaning" department.
Result is strictly porn, but embedded with so many flashbacks, daydreams and other non-linear material as to be nearly incomprehensible. Basically it is the corny story of on-again/off-again lovers as signified by the song, and played by the familiar team of Rene Bond and Ric Lutze.
She's a successful nightclub singer, and unfortunately we have to listen to half a dozen songs belted by Rene (including a direct-sound live performance of the title number on-stage) off-key. Delusions of adequacy by Colberg made this not only a very softcore exercise, when fans were used to seeing the dynamic duo get it on for real, but a dim-witted showcase for Bond's non-talent as a warbler.
Helping to make it watchable is the always delightful Cyndee Summers, cast as Ric's old flame, who seduces him after his sports car breaks down. Ric is supposedly a race car driver, but the film's most intriguing sequence has him working on some test program at a vast old computer center (pure nostalgia), where Bond visits him and humps him, while the computer screen & its cutesy voice cracks jokes.
Near the end of the film there's plenty of racing around the coast highway by the cast, as Colberg tries to impress us with just the kind of footage you don't find in a porn film. Which raises the question of course, where is the footage you DO expect?

This is an extremely difficult film to watch, Certainly, I appreciated seeing it alone. It is not and experience I would wish to share in a theater.
Daniel Day-Lewis may "drink your milkshake," but I doubt very much if he would partake of the woman's (Amira Casar) tea made with a used tampon, and offered to the man (Rocco Siffredi) as a means of bonding. It gives "drinking the blood of my enemies" a whole new meaning.
Catherine Breillat has certainly pushed the envelope with this film about men and women and men's hatred and fears of women. There is really nothing erotic about this film; it is provocation meant to shock and awe.
That may be what is needed in the discussion, but it certainly takes a strong person to observe and think.
The Woman hires The Man, who happens to be gay, and can therefore be more objective (?) to observe her over four nights and comment on what he finds objectionable about women. The love/hate/fear between men and women is discussed and played out in a way I have not seen before, but in such a way that it really made me think. I believe that is Breillat's objective, and she certainly achieved it.
It is not meant to be erotic, and it is not pornographic, although is ostensibly has real sex included, but is, shall we say, meant to provoke discussion.

The story of this film is about a sensitive poor girl which gets sold to a moronic fish dealer who wants to do some perverse sexual practices with her. However, she falls in love with a young gardener boy and both start having a passionate sex affair. After this guy kills the fish dealer and his mother they have to flee from the police, what finally leads to their suicides...
The video label which distributes the first part of "Trilogy of Lust" here in Germany advertised it as "one of the most scandalous films of the 1990s". Now I am a huge fan of Asian cinema and after lots of culty or gruesome stuff like "The Audition", "Men behind the Sun", the Takeshi Kitano films etc. I had high expectations before I watched this. However, the result was a little disappointment, because "Xue lian" is nothing but a normal hardcore porn where the main actress constantly has sex with the same man. Some featured stuff is quite obscure and the climaxes are a scene where a woman get stimulated by an egg, a tame bondage sequence and a faked anal fist f*ck. The rest is business as usual! Personally, I prefer a film like "Tokyo Decadence" to this one, because TD is more stylish, better acted and has a much more developed plot... I will watch part two and three of the "Trilogy of Lust"-series soon, hope they will deliver more than the mediocre original does!

Suffice to say, it’s LAST TANGO IN CHINA – with eggs, sand and eels used in ‘bizarre’ ways, and it all leads to a very gory and shocking ending. Let’s just say that it’s not one for the feminists among you. When the film was released in Hong Kong, it was cut down for the hardcore close-ups, and possibly some violence as well.

Known as, 'Molester Obscene Peeping', for it's 'pink' cinema release, this is a really fun film. The prerequisite sex stops are here at roughly 10 minutes intervals but you get plenty more than that even though this comes in at less than one hour. A storming start sees a hip Tokyo couple heading off for the countryside. There is clearly much more of a gap between city folk and country folk in Japan because here the couple visited would pass for completely crazy. Mind you they can still manage pretty explicit sex with the cucumber gift thoughtfully provided by the young visitors. The director plays the lead cool guy and the 'refugee',a homeless vagabond freely laid into by all and sundry. Back in Tokyo they manage to lead the mentally challenged son of the country couple,astray, by which time we have had sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll aplenty.
